Not a Taylor but perhaps still of interest
« on: January 22, 2012, 08:22:32 PM »
Hi all. I've been talking to Brad Daniels about building a Kolaya Carmen for fingerstyle playing. Because of my poor hearing, we're taking special care to figure out what woods may be best to provide both lushness and clarity. So, Brad offered to send over both the Tornillo Carmen that he showed off at the AGF, and a new one that he is making with Amazon Rosewood back and sides. He just sent some pictures of the new guitar which I'd like to share with you.

I'll be getting this to try out at the end of February and I want to invite anyone in the San Diego area who wants to give it a try to come on over and test it. You can all compare it with my GC-5 and 000-28EC too!

Nice!  A sound port and armrest...if it has a manzer wedge, I'm in love.  Congrats on the new build.  Could you describe your experience.  I've been looking into a commissioned piece, but I'm a little nervous about the whole thing.  Any advice you could give would be great.

Boone, I've had a good time discussing a potential build with Brad. Although I first wrote him after seeing some of his guitars at the AGF, I had no real intention of ordering until after we talked for a while. We sent quite a few emails back and forth talking about my hearing (I use a cochlear implant) and what I think about my other guitars. Brad asked some very intelligent questions and made some suggestions that I thought were pretty well on the mark. He also talked a bit about his shop and goals. No pressure at all, just very friendly conversation too! So one day a few months back I was reading one of his emails and I thought to myself, "I trust this guy to make me a good guitar." And I sent him a check for a deposit the same day.

The guitar pictured above is actually part of the exploration. If it was not clear, I'm just trying this one out, with the intent of seeing how the woods work for my needs. Based on how I react to it (and to the Tornillo Carmen) we'll have some good information that can guide us on the wood selection.

I think that once you can talk to a luthier and learn how they think, how they react to your questions and needs, it's a lot easier to commit to a build.

Wow, that looks like it's going to be a serious stunner!  I love the rosette and fretboard.  That's my favorite style cutaway. And of course, the armrest adds serious class.  The soundhole is interesting ...never played one, but imagine it makes a significant difference.  Can't wait till you post final pics here ...don't forget us!!  :D

Edward, I'm with you on the rosette and soundboard. I am really impressed with Kolaya's aesthetics. Brad manages to make a guitar that is both simple but beautiful IMO. Understated elegance, I really love that.

I'm not sure if I'll specify a wedge on my ultimate order, but it will be fun to try it out. As for the soundhole, we both think that putting the soundhole in would improve the way the guitar sounds to me – one of my hearing problems is trying to distinguish between different notes. I sometimes start playing on the wrong string entirely because I can't tell I'm off by three notes! So the soundhole is probably going to be a good change for me.

More pics! Brad has been filling the pores but has not yet begun spraying the finish, so it isn't exactly smooth at the moment.

Wow!  That's a stunning looking guitar.  If it sounds half as good as it looks, you're a lucky person.

At your command, here are more pics from Brad showing the guitar going through the fret installation and finishing – first coat is now on. :)
