AER Compact 60/3

Anybody using one of these little amps?   

I'm retiring, and downsizing, so the Rivera Sedona is just too big - and goodness knows too heavy!

915CE with retro-fit ES.

Not trying to de-rail you but the Fishman Loudbox Mini is pretty good at its price point for the home or an open mic event. I only bring it up because I attended a Tommy Emmanuel guitar camp last year. TE uses AER amps on tour and swears by them but he told us he was very impressed with the Loudbox series for their size, performance, and price. I thought about an AER 60 but at around $330, the Loudbox Mini fits my needs quite well right now.

The latest AG magazine edition had a nice review on the latest Fender acoustic amps which looks interesting also.

Sprintbob - thanks for the post. 

I will look at that for sure.    I love the Sedona but it weighs just shy of 1,000,000 pounds...   OK, I have a tendency to exaggerate.   Anyhow, it's really heavy.   Built like a brick *&%$house, but really heavy.   I need something smaller and lighter to take into retirement with me.   So I will for sure check out the Loudbox.   

I played a Fishman years ago and thought it was crap (am I going to get this one deleted for that?) but it was a long time ago.   An early solid-state model.   So I'm sure that the technology has come very, very far since then.

Honestly my priorities are:
 - really awesome sound for my acoustic guitar
 - weight less than 20 pounds (25 at most)

I'm happy to pay what it costs... but don't want to compromise on these criteria.

Comments,  please!!!    I relish the thought of contrary / interesting ideas and suggestions!

I'm using a Bose L1 Compact. Price wise a little less than the AER. Really great sound.
It's meant to be a P.A. so you have that flexibility. The guitar tone is excellent and it is 25 lbs.

I also have a loudbox mini that I think makes the ES2 sound great.  Even use it as a DI when playing through a PA like Tommy others do with the AER.  Paying 1/3rd the price was a big reason I went that route.  Vocals sound great through it as well.  But if I was really loaded and money was no object, the AER would be a serious contender.

I have the Bose L1 Compact like cc407, and love the flexibility. I run my guitar through my Ipad via an Apogee Jam, and use Garage Band to pick my amp,  add any effects (reverb, phase, chorus, delay, etc.), then just run the sound out the headphone jack of Ipad into the Bose. The tone is awesome. Can even run this through an Iphone also, which allows you to walk around on stage if you wish. Using the 1/8" input on the Bose also gives room for another instrument and a microphone. Like I said, all kinds of flexibility, and great sound.

I suppose if there were "one best amp" there would be one amp mfr.    That wouldn't be an fun! Thanks to all for the comments.

I had a 60/3 that I sold to Larry Pattis out in the Pacific NW (check him out, a fine acoustic player).  He is very pleased with it.  I thought, for just amplifying an acoustic, it sounded fantastic.  And it is so incredibly light for the volume it puts out.  I wanted something that would cover my acoustic and vocals, and while the AER can do that well, I didn't think the midrange of the amp did anything for my voice (I need all the help I can get in that department).  So, I moved over to the SR Technologies/Schertler Jam 150, which is much more PA-like.

Having said all that, the Loudbox Series from Fishman really do sound fantastic.  If you're not aware of him, Eric Alabiso https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_Wrmzze9Es, this is a clip of him doing Marley/Mayfield at an outdoor patio.  It's his Martin, SM57a Beta, and a Loudbox Performer recorded handholding an iPhone.  Admittedly, it's a bigger amp than the Mini, but it will give you an idea of the Loudbox sound quality.

Update - I pulled the trigger and the AER Compact 60/3 is here at home with me.   

Wow.   I can sum it up in a few comments:

1 - it's just like the guitar (Taylor 915-CE ES2 retro)only louder; a little bright with everything flat but plenty of bass with the knob at 2:00   

2 - it is impossible that something that small and light can achieve that sound, but it does; clean and clear 

3 - lovely for fingerpicking, then stays true on hard strumming without adjustment;  idiot-proof

Conclusion - it's my last amp.  Worth every penny (quite a few of them).   Once again, you get what you pay for.   

Thanks to all for the comments.   You gave me a lot to think about, and listen to.
