After months of deliberation, reading past topics, and asking for advices, I finally pulled the trigger for a modified 2012 Taylor 914 (Engelmann Top instead of Sitka, 1 11/16th nut width) ... I hope I made the right decision about the Engelmann *cross-fingers*..
It's gonna be a long wait!..


Anyone care to share their experience with an engelmann top/ eir b and s with the CV bracing?

I really love the over-the-top abalone appointments on those 9's. 
You're right, the wait will be agony!

I love the 1 11/16th neck. I have one on my BTO and love the playability over the standard neck.

Over the years, I've had the opportunity to play some earlier 912s (when they were new) with engelmann tops. They were some of the sweetest rosewood guitars I've ever played. The CV bracing should theoretically enhance the midrange to provide a more complete tonal range. Should sound great!

My BTO has Engelmann top with Rosewood B/S with the CV bracing.  It sounds awesome so I know you won't be dissapointed.  Mine does have the standard width neck so I can't answer about the 1 11/16th neck.  I find the sound does really great for fingerpicking.  I hope you don't have to wait too long...

Thanks! I hope it comes earlier. I haven't seen a 914 so whatever comes out of the box will surely be a surprise for me I'm not playing anything in the mean time because I left my guitar (a crappy ovation) in New Jersey. Now my hands are itching to play something !!

Me too! I spent about 3 hours comparing a 1 3/4 and 1 11/16th nut width taylors in Guitar Center last week and came to the conclusion that the 1 11/16th is the one for me

That's good to hear.. I hope mine sounds good too. I'm going to be doing a little of fingerpicking as well as some moderate strumming. I hope it suits me

I have an engelmann top on my 514, and I'm a full time strummer/picker. You'll have no performance loss. You'll get the volume with some added sweetness and warmth. (I had mis-read your original post and thought you were getting a 912.) In any case, I've played earlier versions of both 912s and 914s, and the engelmann tops, in my opinion, gave these guitars a very special sound. Enjoy!

imho, i believe you'll be very happy with your 914

I believe engelmann was the standard top on some previous 914ce's, but due to its availability, there is a surcharge for it. I used to own a non-CV braced 914ce with engelmann (and the tobacco burst). The tone was warmer than sitka.

Now you have a long, LONG wait.

Engelmann is great stuff ...and especially with RW.  Some folks like the glassiness of spruce w/rw, but I find (with Taylors, that is) the spruce/rw combo lacks mids and enphasizes the bottom and top; like big bass along with too much "zing" on the highs.  Personally, I've found the engelmann (like cedar) adds warmth  with accentuated mids, and also calms down the brightness, lending a crisp, defined notes without the zing.  So suffice it to say, I prefer the tone of engel with rw (not to mention the BTO of a forumite here with a cedar/rw 914 has got to sound nothing short of gorgeous!!).  My RT Style2 --a GC sized body-- is maple with engelmann ...you'd never think it but the bass is truly big and deep, yet the mids are clear, warm, and focused, and all the notes, not just the highs, have a beautiful crisp "finish" that creates lovely definition and individual-note distinction.  I know this is a different build altogether, but I cannot help bt think the engelmann contributes much to the timbre of this guitar.  Huge congrats!  And as per forum bylaws, you are bound to posting a multitude of pics or risk being shunned by members/addicts.
