Who else would prefer a 1.75" nut version of the GS Mini?
« on: February 26, 2012, 01:28:16 PM »
I had a GS Mini for a week but sadly sent it back because I couldn't get used to the neck.  Given that Taylor is so well known for their 1.75" nut width, I'm a little surprised they made the GS Mini so narrow.

I'd be first in line for a 1.75" GS Mini.  Who's with me?

I'm in. I've owned 2. Sold the fist one the first time I played out w/it. Gave the other to my Grandaughter for Christmas.
Both sounded great. I set hers up w/Martin 10's.I widened the spacing on several 1-11/16" nuts, just have to be careful not to pull the e strings off in the first position.

I like the Mini the way it is too, although I only have my GS to compare it to.

I feel like Goldilocks........
GS is a tad big
Mini is a tad small
Played a GC that seemed just right........

I have been spending alot of time playing my ukulele lately so when I pick up the GS it's like....wow!

I would also prefer a 1-3/4" nut but seem to be selling fine the way they are so i doubt Taylor will make any changes.

I'm not saying they should discontinue the current neck, but instead that I wish they would offer a second version with the 1.75" nut.  I can hope, can't I?

The absence of a 1-3/4" neck is exactly what has kept me from buying one.

Since it is an NT type neck, I would think they could make the 1-3/4" nut necks available to dealers who could then switch the neck when you buy it.

I have wide fingers and cannot play well with any narrow neck.  I might buy a Mini if it was available in 1-3/4.  I will nevermore buy any narrow neck guitar after discovering the wider Taylor formula.  If Taylor would like to sell more Mini's than they currently do, they should offer it with 1-3/4 neck. It is a progressive company that responds to demand so I think it might be a good possibility.  I would love to try a Mahogany top wide neck Mini.

Between the 1-11/16" nut and the 23" scale length, it's just a little too cramped for me to justify getting one. I too would probably buy one of the mahogany versions with a 1.75" width. I also wish they had a wood veneer on the headstock, but that's just me being picky.

It would be great if they could set up their GS Mini tooling/production to offer a couple different nut widths, a couple different scale lengths, and a few different wood choices as part of a "modify a model" GS Mini program for custom orders via dealers:

Nut width -- 1-11/16" or 1.75"
Scale length -- 23.5" or 24.5"
Headstock veneer -- synthetic or wood veneer (rosewood or ebony at upcharge)
Top wood (solid) -- spruce, cedar, mahogany, koa (upcharge for koa top)
Back/sides wood (laminate) -- sapele (paired with spruce, cedar, or mahogany), rosewood (paired with spruce or cedar), koa (paired with spruce or koa)
Electronics -- Set up for ES-Go or plain with standard end pin (I really don't like the big metal endpin it comes standard with)
Pickguard -- with or without (I think they already offer this option)

Bob also hinted at all-solid GS Minis in the future -- my guess is those would be released as part of a Spring/Fall Limited run. I wonder what the price point would be on something like that.

Steve
finally got a digital mic & played with it today -
made some measurements on a 814ce & GS Mini

i took the measurement on the center of the top of the saddle & subtracted
0.0345 for half the diameter of the E & e on the Mini (.013 & .056) & 0.0340
on the 814ce measurement, as there are EXP19s .012 to .056 on that guitar

string spacing at the saddle both guitars is  2.1960"

814ce
1.7595" nut width (widest part of the nut)
1.4780" string spacing @ the nut
1.7395" neck width @ 1st fret
1.4725" string spacing @ 1st fret

GS Mini
1.7020" nut width (widest part of the nut)
1.4050" string spacing @ the nut
1.7330" neck width @ 1st fret
1.4400" string spacing @ 1st fret

0.0065" difference in neck width @ 1st fret
0.0325" difference in string spacing @ 1st fret

calculated
0.0054" difference in individual spacing
(each string further apart on 1 3/4")

either having a blank nut cut or a 1 3/4" replacement nut sanded to match the
contour at each end (overall width) could work, in terms of the spacing,
but the difference is more likely in the 'feel' (neck carve & overall scale) as the
difference in overall width at 1st fret is virtually nil (.0065" or half of a .013 e)

i'm ok with my Mini :)

I would be interested trying one if it had a 1 3/4" nut, I haven't even bothered knowing it's not.

I know it should hardly be noticeable, but I don't like the Taylor 1 11/16 on the 200 and lower series guitars.  Like you said, it probably has more to do with the carve of the neck.  I know I have played other 1 11/16 nut guitars and they have felt great.  My Taylor is a pre-NT, and I love the neck.  I have had other post-NTs with the 1 3/4 and I always thought they were a bit bulky.  Has to be the sum of the parts, not just the one dimension.

After feeling that many were over-reacting to a 1/16" difference, I had a 214 that I would still have were it not for that missing 1/16". I have played others as well that seemed narrow to me so I've come 180 degrees...
