Many, many thanks for the encouragement!  I am feeling 100% about this decision!  I have a shelf full of pretty good fake books and am already starting to think about what songs I'm going to assign to and start learning with this great guitar.

You're saying it took you seven months to get an 812?  Holy cow, you could have had three BTO's built in that time!

I was originally quoted 8-10 weeks lol. When I went to ask my dealer about it in mid-July they double checked with Taylor and apparently my order had somehow gotten lost so I ended up having to wait till November. Since I had received a pretty good deal on the guitar I decided not to make a fuss about it. Mistakes can happen. Happily my guitar ended up being more than I had hoped for so it all evened out :)

Is it a short scale?

Nope.....all standard on dimensions.  The only option will be the western red cedar top.  I've got long arms, 6 feet tall; I figured the standard scale will be fine and will fit me ok.  I played a 512ce and it sat real well with my ergonomics.

I need to correct my earlier answer to Satsuki. Previously, I thought short scale = 12 frets, period.  I've subsequently learned that the standard neck on the Grand Concerts IS a short scale although it is 14 frets. That's what I'm getting and it's ok with me, so yes, it will be a short scale, which is standard.

Because Taylor doesn't have much in the way of dimensional specs on the new website, or else I can't find them,  I was blissfully unaware of this fact, until Ted thankfully gave me the correct info.

Those of you who own or have played short scale models:  what are your thoughts about the playability compared to "regular" scale?

This is a pretty common error! But now you know the difference. :)

Hmm, well, before I bought my GC-5 (short scale) I also tested a GA. I did not notice any difference in playability between the two at the time. However, when I play my Voyage-Air, which is standard scale, I can definitely tell that the strings have more tension. My GC (and my Martins, both of which have short scale as well) are noticeably easier to fret than the V-A.

I love it, personally. I have smallish hands so the short-scale makes everything a lot easier for me. The intonation is still bang on and even though the difference only feels slight to a few of my friends they are blessed with much longer fingers than I, haha. I don't think I will ever purchase another guitar without short scale.

Even though I've been pouring through the issue repeatedly, today I found, on page 21 of the Winter 2012 Wood and Steel, that the short scale length on the Grand Concert is 24 7/8 inches.  I'm looking forward even more to getting my 812ce.

AWESOME! welcome to the cedar/rosewood club! :)

I still LOVE the sound of my guitar, still getting used to how deep the guitar is vs my 414ce.

I use a medium gauge pick and love it!

I'm actively learning a song called "broken angel" by a band called Boyce avenue. the live and acoustic version (it's on YouTube)

can't wait to see your guitar and congrats!

My 2001 712 is standard scale and the 2011 812 (spruce) is short scale.  I find the difference subtle but the 812 is definitely easier to play (I don't have problems adapting when switching between the two).  This is particularly noticable when reaching up the fretboard where the shorter distance between frets really helps, although for me I don't notice a significant difference in string tension (I have the same guage strigs on both).

I love playing them both (they are really comfortable guitars to play), but I particularly love the 812 and I'm sure you will love yours too - the cedar top should be great!

Right you are, and I forgot that.....embarrassing.  I wish this site had a "subscribe to thread" function, not just the "notify" thing.  The "subscribe" function allows members to have a list of threads of their own to re-visit without any recent activity.

Anyway, as I said in your original thread about your 914ce/cedar,  I'll buy it from you!

Seriously, your whole thought process, research, and reporting were extremely helpful to me.  In fact I'm going to print  some of it for my Taylor file!

hehe, that's why I remembered you, I cracked up laughing at your purchase quote :)

I'm glad it was helpful, it was a scary process b/c not alot of people have done it, so I tried to capture all my experiences so far.

let the wait begin! :)
