Woods picked, BTO begins! - NGD out for delivery!
« on: January 26, 2012, 03:05:54 PM »
So I've chosen my woods and am so excited to have my new GC underway! Macassar ebony and sinker redwood. Have wanted this exact combination for a long time. Ebony binding, green purfling, green-ish abalone rosette, no inlays, macassar headstock overlay ... sigh ... can't wait!

The sinker looks pretty dark and stripey which makes me very happy and the ebony b/s were actually reserved for an R Taylor, so should be a nice piece of wood.

hi miles,
congrats :)

that's a nice looking wood set you've got to start with there :D
i was curious if there are any other specs you'd like to share, such as the
neck specs (width, carve & scale length, 12 fret or 14 & if 14, CV, adi CV
or Standard II bracing, backwedge or no, bone nut/saddle or no,
backstrap, slotted or solid headstock & if solid, Gotoh tuners or no ???

sorry for so many questions, as i'm trying to envision the finished guitar -
i'll bet it'll be a 'looker' with the tone to match ... thanks for sharing the pics :)

Thanks for asking Michael, sure thing!

Let's see, short scale, slim carve neck (hope I don't regret that, would love to hear from others) no backstrap this time but a macassar headstock overlay on a solid h/s. Antique gold Gotohs, bone nut, Adi bracing, and changed the purfling at last minute to blk/white. Just didn't trust the green !

Hey mea, I bet that will be a lovely guitar!

Can you tell us why you chose ebony as the B&S wood? I'm considering ebony as one of the choices for my upcoming Kolaya, and I'd appreciate any thoughts you have about its characteristics.

hi miles
thanks for sharing the specs :)
visualizing now ...
wow :o

i think you'll be happy with the purfling you chose, as the sinker & macassar are rather dark

i'm not certain if the slim carve is in between the standard & T5 carve or if it is the other way
around (with the slim being the 'slimmest'), but i do seem to recall that the slim carve is very
close to the neck profile on the DDSM, i so believe that it's not quite as 'slinky' in feel as a T5

sounds like it'll be really nice (tone & aesthetics) 8)

Hey Sachi, two reasons. I already have more of a standard sitka-topped GA that's bright, great for
strumming and such. So I wanted to balance it out and go for something a little darker in tone, to
inspire my fingerpicking and songwriting.

also, i have to admit the aesthetics of that combo have always called to me :)

Thanks. Because of my hearing I am hoping to find woods that will give me clarity as well as full rich tone. Brad at Kolaya has suggested that Ebony might be a good choice, so that is why I wondered about your decision.

I am really fussy about the looks of Macassar Ebony and I think you selected a great looking set! Can't wait to see the finished results!

Love the sinker top you've chosen!

How did it come about for you to choose the woods for your BTO? Did Taylor email your dealer a few choices to show you giving you a chance to select the ones you liked the most?

That's gonna be a beauty!

Thx for the comment. Well, I'm actually a Taylor artist. I spent many years as a sideman in Nashville and now am working in a Broadway show, so I've been fortunate to have a relationship with Taylor. Didn't use a dealer. But even then, I was only given a few choices for each. Not like I'm Zac Brown or Tommy Shaw or anything :)
