String buzzing new GS MINI - HELP
« on: August 16, 2017, 02:28:22 AM »
Hello everyone,

I bought my first Taylor guitar less than 2 month ago (It's a gs mini e walnut.)
I have a problem that is very disturbing right now, the E string (big chord) is buzzing when playing without touching the fretboard.
And this buzzing sound will depends on the position/inclination of the guitar. If the guitar is on its stand or on its back, it's not buzzing.

The buzzing sound is when playing the E (empty string) but also when playing this string while touching the 11th, 12th, and 13th frets.

I am a beginner but I think this sound was always there but it was very light almost not audible and when playing fast on this string. But now, it's just terrible !
The guitar needs to be tuned more often also.

I didn't change the strings yet and nothing happened to the guitar. It's on its stand when I am not playing it.
I have other instruments for several years in the same room including a celtic harp and it has no problem.

Can you please tell me what to do ?
I bought the guitar on woodbrass website (France). I don't know if the Taylor warranty will work for this.

Thank you in advance,

You probably just need to adjust the truss rod to put a bit more relief in the neck; sometimes these things happen as the guitar 'settles' in.  I'm pretty sure Taylor's web site has information on that procedure, complete with illustrations that should clarify why you're seeing this problem.  Try doing a web search using those key words ("Taylor truss rod adjustment") and something useful should pop up for you.  The most important thing to keep in mind when making truss rod adjustments is to go slowly, making small turns on the truss rod nut, then evaluating the results.

It's a simple procedure and should only take you a few minutes to perform; but if you're uncomfortable doing it yourself you can take the guitar to any qualified luthier (preferably a Taylor dealer) and have them do it.  If you could take it to the dealer from whom you bought it, they'd almost certainly make the adjustment for free.

Good luck!

Timfitz63, thank you for your reply !

I don't have any key to adjust the truss rod and I think, for the first time, I may bring the guitar to a luthier.
I will contact a shop next week (lots of shops are closed right now) ams see if they can do it. It's very hard to find a Taylor dealer in my area (only Martin). I had to buy it online.
I will buy a truss rod key for when I am ready to do it myself (maybe I can practice on an old guitar first  ;D)

Thanks again !
I don't have any news from Taylor yet

The fact that your "open" E string buzzes does not sound like a truss rod/neck relief issue. Does your gs mini have es2 electronics installed? If so, I would check the wiring cable tie points inside the guitar and make sure they are secure...I've experienced this problem on two Taylors where they sympathetically buzz the loose wires inside. Good luck!

you can often use one of those screwdrivers with interchangeable bits to adjust the truss rod. Just take the bit out once you've got the cover off, and use the handle as a nut driver. It's no big deal if you're careful..... I do no more than 1/8th of a turn ...then check. In most cases, a little dab'll do ya. Turn it counter clockwise to put a little relief bow in the neck or clockwise to flatten it out more.
Honestly, When I do it, I worry more about losing the truss rod cover screws than I do about harming the neck. :D

Take it back where you bought it and tell them to fix it.  They should be an authorized Taylor repair center.  It's just a minor setup issue that they should be able to resolve relatively quickly.
Aloha!

I would simply call Taylor. I spoke with them a couple of times after I bought my GS mini and they were very helpful. They may direct you to a Taylor authorized servicer in your area who can help you free of charge if it's under warranty. If it's not under warranty they are still helpful.
