Goodbye high humidity ;) :)

So I was tired of buying every product in the world to get my humidity "somewhat" optimal. I've purchased the D'addario 2 Way Humidifier system (recommended by Taylor), Silica Gel Packets, Ever Bamboo charcoal dehumidifier Packets (recommended by Taylor), 2 Damp-Rid buckets, (New) Weather stripping for doors and windows and more.

I decided to buy a dehumidifier FINALLY lol. So i looked at reviews, ratings and more and decided on the Frigidaire 50 Pint FFAD5033R1. I looked online for stores locally (Lowes, Home Depot, Best Buy, Wal-Mart) to have this model in stock locally. I have two Best Buy stores locally that showed one in stock at each store and no other stores had this model in stock. Once I got to Best Buy they could not find the "1" in stock at both stores. So I seen the Frigidaire 70 Pint FFAD7033R1 for $50 more but I found it $30 less on Amazon and Best Buy price matched so for $20 more I get a little more efficiency So $199.33

So got it home and everything setup and within 45 minutes on factory setting my humidity dropped from 60% to 45% - No joke. I'm getting a 45% reading from 3 hygrometers in my finished basement where I have my music gear.

Now my Taylor Sense in my Taylor 814CE is reading 55% which is lower than 58% where it started which is a small improvement But I figure being that it's wood it'll take more time for moisture to be removed and for the guitar to acclimate to the new humidity because of course removing moisture is slower process in wood vs the air within the house itself.

With this being in my finished basement I've also noticed my upstairs area has changed from 59% to 46%. I can't believe this thing is working for both floors. I'm so happy and feel safe taking my guitar out to play now Previously I would dread and worry about taking my guitar out and now I'm excited and happy to take my guitar out to play without worries

If anyone is questioning whether to pull the trigger on a Humidifier due to the cost or if your buying products like I was to only get somewhat ok humidity numbers then I say take the plunge and buy one. I feel so relieved and at peace now :)I figure for all the money I have invested in gear that $199 is not bad for the peace of mind. Not only that but its healthier and so much more for you.

So I'm curious. Your profile says Vermont; I'm in Boston, not too far away. The last few weeks the humidity has been all over the place, and we're back to extremely humid today. I use Oasis packs for the winter furnace season, but I've never been overly concerned about the humidity being all over the place in summer, as I have figured it would even out after a day or two. While I have been shy about bringing out (from its case) and playing a solid wood instrument when excessive humidity lasts for days, I haven't noticed any ill-effects overall. So is the humidity worse up there? Have you noticed any effects that led to this? Just being careful? Am I being reckless?

Hi, yes I live in the Franconia, Vermont area. Due to the large amounts of forestry and waterways here it can get very humid (more than the weather reports). Typically seeing high 70%to mid 80% outside with humidity. My house sits back under a heavily forested canopy area of the woods and humidity just hangs strong. My house is older as well which doesn't help. I have seen inside humidity average without the humidifier at 58%.

With the high humidity I noticed my string height a slight higher and my guitar sounded a little bloated (best way I can describe it) lol.

I would say it would be best to run a dehumidifier if your reading high humidity inside. Best to buy a hygrometer at a local hardware store or Walmart. If you notice your running high inside then I'd invest in a dehumidifier. Set the dehumidifier at say 45% and if humidity is low on a given day then the dehumidifier won't need to kick on. Areas with sporadic humidity jumps can be just as bad from what I've read.

Are you being reckless? Well I really don't know how to answer that but I believe I was reckless my self and wish I never was. I was afraid to take my guitar out of its case at times for fear of humidity although I believe it does take consistent days of high humidity to bring on harm and yes I had high humidity for days. If you have the money to buy a dehumidifier then I'd go for it. It's better to be safe than sorry or dishearten over your guitar sounding bloated. Again if their are days when humidity drops low then your dehumidifier won't need to run as much and will not kick on.

Btw the house feels a lot better and I don't have to run the ac as much. With humidity low the ac doesn't have to be so low and it feels great inside. This will also help with my allergies and,ore.

We've always used the whole home concept for humidification and dehumidification (too many instruments). It works well for them, plus all the wood furniture and wood in the house. Not to mention, it's heathier for the human and canine creatures that live with the instruments. We have found it to be quite easy to control. Just have to get a system down. Glad to hear this is working for you.
