Acid Fingers

My daughter has fingers that turn strings into horrible black corroded things in no time.

At the weekend we went to the local store and she decided that she wants a 150 12 string for her forthcoming 18th birthday!

So far she's destroyed every type of string I've tried and I only let her play on my GS mini nowadays.

Has anyone else got the same problem?

Yes, a playing buddy of mine had that very problem years back.  No lasting solution I can think of, sorry. 

You had mentioned that you tried every string out there, but have you tried Elixir's polywebs?  The tone is a bit darker than nanos, but the coating is considerably thicker.  Not a perfect solution but may buy her more playing time per set.

I don't think that I have Edward, I know I've tried nanos on hers but I'll get a set for next time.

Pick up some string cleaner (I use Dunlop 65) and be sure to clean the strings after every playing session.

Yes I'll try that too Flashdharma, I do tell her to wipe them down every time but whether she does is another matter.

Thanks for all your suggestions,
I went to a local shop to get some Elixr Polywebs but they didn't have any so I ended up with a set of Martin Lifepans. I'll see how she gets on with those.

Yes, by all means use Dunlop 65 frequently.  Plus, using GHS Fast Fret at the beginning and end of each sessions has really worked for me.

Another vote for spray string cleaner. I have a friend who applies it very liberally, almost to the point of soaking the fretboard and then mops it off with a clean cloth. Otherwise his strings get funky real quick.

I've never had this problem but it's been hot in the UK and I've played a couple of gigs where I've got pretty sweaty. Both times I've got the guitar out of the case a day after and found the strings completely dead. I'm trying some nanoweb now which I don't usually like but hopefully will save me some money and time restringing.

Hey Craig,

Elixir Polywebs aren't nearly as popular as their Nanos, so it doesn't surprise me that your local shop doesn't have them.  Just go to stringsandbeyond and have a set shipped to your door (order more and you'll get free shipping ;) ).  Great guys there ...give em a try :)
