FYI - Strings on a GSMini
« on: April 07, 2017, 08:18:20 PM »
Today I was in GC playing some guitars. I noticed they had 3 Minis - a Spruce, Hog, and Koa.
So I was doing a comparison (I already have a Spruce).
Anyway, the sales lady was there and she said all 3 came with mediums installed, but each had a set of custom lights also in the box.
So they put the custom lights on all 3. I would have never known.

(Edit: I meant HD Elixer Lights, not custom lights)

I prefer the mediums. The mediums, with the lower string tension (shorter scale length on a GS Mini), is a great feel, and they have a nice tone and volume. They pose no issues for me. That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.  ;)

I'm with Taylorgirl on this one, but the lights on my KOA mini for the wife to learn on are okay, they don't give up too much.

So what did you think of the HD Lights on the Mini? What were your impressions of how they compare to the stock mediums? I run mediums on my own Minis, but I recently got a set of the HD Lights to try when the current ones need changing.

When i bought my Mini lat summer, I wasn't used to to using .13's. They felt thick and stiff to me.  I tried every type of string - from different manufacturers. Probably 20 different kinds of strings - my wife thought I was nuts! 10's, 11's, 12's... Sunbeams, Retro, DR Rare, HD Lights, etc etc..  All of these strings caused and incredible amount Fret buzz.  I even adjusted the truss rod, (all the way!) and shimmed the saddle.  Couldn't get rid of the buzz. So I relented, and put a new set of Elixir PB 13's on.  I also replaced the saddle with a Taylor Micarta Saddle... Now I'm used to the .13's, and I love of the feel of it now -- go figure. No more fret buzz either!

I put Elixer lights on my GS Minis and enjoy the comfort they afford me.
A friend put Elixer extra lights on his GS Mini and it still sounds and plays great.
