Do Tuning Pegs get "loose?"
« on: January 26, 2017, 01:12:38 PM »
I tuned my 1997 414ce the other night and the tuning pegs felt "loose."  Is this normal?  Are they "adjustable?"  Or do I need to look at replacement?  Any idea of the cost?  Thanks.

Hi Jim,

FWIW, the next time you are doing a string change, keep all the strings off for a moment and feel the tension of each tuning key.  You can adjust the resistance of each key by simply adjusting the small slotted screwhead located on the end of the key, itself.  FWIW, I've found every tuning key I've ever had my hands on too tight for my taste, so I simply loosen that screw (on whatever guitar I've owned over decades, not just Taylors ...if it's got a screw, I've checked its tension).  And just so you know, the tuning key's looser/tighter feel has no bearing whatever on your peg's ability to hold its position, so no worries about tuning issues.  My keys, for example, turn with little effort, the way I like it.  Experiment and find the tension you like :)
