GS Mini sounds great with light strings.....
« on: October 08, 2016, 11:17:43 AM »
I put a set of Elixir Light (12-53), Acoustic Phosphor Bronze with NANOWEB Coating strings on my GS Mini and it sounds great. Another benefit is it is really easy to play.

I purchased it second hand, and the strings that were on it were sounding a little dull, so I ordered a set of Exlxir mediums. Well, the mediums sounded good, but the Mini was so much harder to play. I hadn't realized the previous owner had Light strings on it until I matched them up.

All I can say is these Elixir lights sound great, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them.

Shortly after I received my Holden Village Mini, I did the same. Easier to play, but the intonation was off. I put the mediums back on, but could only play short sessions until the fingertip pain caused me to buzz notes. So, enter Ted Brown music. Put the lights back on, got it set up, and - yup - sounds and plays much better. Actually, the lights tend to bring out the brightness in the maple and spruce, and it balances out quite nicely with the no-pick fingerstyle I use. It did lose some bass response, and with a plectrum can get quite twangy - great sound for Ventures or old Country stuff!

I just re-strung mine with the recommended 13's.

They are hard on the fingers & I never could get the action as low as I like it on my GS Mini.

I'll give your suggestion a try next string change.

Thanks for the tip.

it's a trade off- volume vs. ease of play. Because the GS Mini is short scale, I always found it easy to play, even with the Mediums. And I really want as much volume as possible- so I always followed the Taylor recommendation, and used the Mediums. But that's just me- YMMV

Try the Light-Mediums by Elixir. Bright up front, bass in the back!   8)
