Bone saddle
« on: September 03, 2016, 10:20:00 PM »
Received a bone saddle from Bob Colosi today.  It took about an hour to prep it and install.  Directions from Bob were easy and  I kept the Elixir Nanoweb strings so I could do a good comparison.  I have read a lot of opinions on the sound change using bone both positive and negative.  So decided to try it myself and form my own opinion.  Sound and tone are very subjective, so I wanted to discover the differences for myself.  I have to say, after the install, I will keep the bone saddle on my 414ce.  Acoustically, it has more mid range and a crisper sound.  Aplified through a Fishman mini, smoother sound and accented bass.  The difference is not overwhelming to the point that I needed to make the change, however, the changes were positive.

I too prefer a bone saddle on my 400 series Taylor.  I am glad you got your saddle from Bob Colosi instead of the Taylor wave-compensated bone saddle.  I bought one of Taylor saddles and is was full of voids when I held it up to the light and sounded thin.  The one I got from Colosi is solid and sounds great.

I read a lot of posts about tusq vs bone.  For not a lot of money, I thought I would give it a try to see if the overall sound could be improved, not that it wasn't great with the tusq saddle.  I am hearing more clarity to the sound, brings out the tone with a distinctive ring to it and better sustain.   Reading quite a few web sites, Bob was highly recommended so I went this way.   I am using the Elixir nanoweb strings, but will probably experiment with others.

I put a Taylor bone saddle in my 314ce when I had my local dealer do some tweaking to the setup. I really like the way the guitar sounds now, but I can't tell if it's any different than before, or if the changes (if any) are due to the new setup or due to the bone saddle.

I could be the set up affected the tone, depending on what was done.  The good news is, if you like the way it sounds now, you haven't spent a lot of money on the bone saddle.
