I hope it's OK for me to repost my recent contribution to the Gravity pick thread on the AGF. I'm putting it here in case any UTGF members here do not read that forum and because I found a Gravity that works fabulous for me on my Ovangkol 414ce with 80/20 strings. The tone is buttery smooth. Like ice cream melting. Really love it so far at least for solo picking and mellow tone.
--------------------------------------------
Summary: loved it for strumming, on 80/20's, on silk and steels, for palm muting, and for playing up the neck.
I tested two gravity picks supplied as samples on free offer to AGF members and compared them with others in my collection. They are excellent for certain uses and I liked them enough to order more.
The 1.5mm acrylic Gravity picks are very similar to the 1.5mm V-pick Tradition except the Gravity has a smoother more polished edge. I can see it, feel it and hear the difference in that it makes less pick scrape at steeper pick angles.
The closest mass produced pick in my collection is the 2.00mm Lexan Big Stubby. The Gravity 1.5 is a little louder and brighter and has a clearer tone than the Stubby. I like the Stubby played on the corners but can't use the point as it's too long for me and you are forced to hold it only at the depressions. I like the Gravity better because you can move it around and change your grip.
This is the first pick I have been able to control and move around in my grip while playing. It warms up and sticks to your fingers and can be played with a more relaxed hand. It doesn't catch on the strings but slides ove them. I can play faster and make less mistakes than with my formerly beloved Gators.
Because they are loud and have clear tone the Gravity is great for palm muting. A dull thuddy pick doesn't give you much range of tone for that effect. Also when fetting or playing with a capo higher on the neck the volume and tone tends to suffer but the Gravity brings it back.
I didn't like them all that much on PB strings where I prefer the woody effect of the Gators that blend all those stray harmonics together, but your taste may vary. I loved the Gravity on 80/20's where the clear tone of the strings and the clear tone of the pick work together. The picks were divine on silk and steels where they returned some of the volume lost by the "silk" and at the same time the silk tamed any stray pick noise. For silk and steel, up the neck, with palm muting = Gravity required.
I expected to prefer the Classic XL Tradition (red) over the Striker XL (yellow) because I like to play the corners too but for some reason the yellow one sounds better and more mellow to me and feels better in my hand. It may be the color, or how I hold it but that pick works so well for me I will have to order a spare in case I lose it. I also ordered a blue 3.0mm Classic but don't like it as much as the 1.5mm size which has more "feel" to me. The 3.0 doesn't enable me to do anything I can't do with the 1.5mm.
I think you might have to try more than one of these picks to find the best for you.
