GS MINI Type Backpack Gig Bag for a GA?
« on: October 17, 2014, 09:28:52 AM »
Hey Guys and Gals,

looking for a gig bag recommendation for my 514ce.

If you've owned a GS mini, you may have loved the gig bag as much as me.  I have a dog I like to take on walks where I can stop and play guitar at parks and what not, and having a backpack type gig bag frees up both my hands to handle the leash comfortably (my dog weighs about 140, so this helps!).

I was able to get a back pack style gig bag from my local dealer (for a T5, I think) that fits my Martin 000-15 perfectly, but my 514ce won't fit in her.  So she gets left home when I really want to take her out.

Looking online I see a standard gig bag for GA/DR but it doesn't have the back pack straps.  Has anyone here purchased a gig bag with backpack straps for a GA?  Doesn't have to be Taylor branded.  Would love to hear a success story I can emulate. :)

Will be watching this thread myself.  I believe that Captain Jim had good success with an Access gig bag that should meet your specs when looking for his Rainsong Shorty (parlor sized).  Maybe he'll see this and provide some details.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

Taylor's hard bag that came with my 214ce nylon has back pack straps.  It is a substantial case.

I've tried a bunch of them.  My favorite is a Mono bag.  Not cheap, but rock solid with handy pockets.  I use mine for open mics and guitar camps.  Couldn't be happier.

Thanks for the recs!  Perfect on both packs mentioned, except I thought both prices were somewhat exorbitant.  Nevertheless, I'll dig deep or maybe see if I can find either used.  You never know!

There should be some discounted Taylor hard bags available where 100 and 200 series guitars were up-graded to hard cases.

Sorry, but if you want the padding and neck support features of the GS Mini gig bag, I think you're gonna pay for it. Roughly the same price as the Taylor bag....

Protection costs and is insurance. Just sayin

What about these?

https://www.taylorguitars.com/taylorware/category/for-your-guitar/bags

I bought one years ago, and it's perfect for any of my GAs when I want to travel light. It does have the backpack straps.

Considering what I pay for my guitars, buying a very protective gig bag is a small price to pay in the long run.  Everyone has their own pain threshold when it comes to buying guitar accessories, but a gig bag is not where I choose to scrimp.

Dennis, That Mono Bag looks impressive.  I also like the assortment of other bags.

It's an incredibly well-made, useful, durable, and highly protective bag.  You get what you pay for.  At least half a dozen people I  know have bought them after seeing mine.

You can often find them at GC or Musician's Friend, and 15% off coupons are frequently available.

I own two Mono bags for electrics ...Mono is top-notch quality and protection that I trust my guits in.

For acoustic and the times I want my hands free, though, I use a Gator "hard bag" which is a nylon bag that zippers just like a gigbag, but has rigid/thick foam walls throughout.  Think of it as a super-light hardcase with a gigbag shell/backpack straps.  Killer!  It fits my dread, GA, GS ...not the perfect "glove" fit as you could likely tell, but still plenty secure without the guitar sloshing around inside.  It's really good protection if you want to spend less than "Mono" money. :)

An awesome member of this forum has offered to sell me his lightly used 14 series Taylor backpack gig bag for a very reasonable price, so I'm excited to report my problem is solved.  I'm also glad to read all of the interesting information about the mono and gator brands of gig bags as well...and you guys are all right about protecting these expensive investments...sometimes I'm too cheap for my own good!

SKB also makes a GS mini type backpack hard bag that will fit a GA
http://www.skbcases.com/music/products/proddetail.php?f=&id=221&o=new&offset=new&c=136&s=75
the one for the mini
http://www.skbcases.com/music/products/proddetail.php?f=&id=685&o=new&offset=new&c=136&s=75

the Taylor hardbag fits both GA & DN models & it's a nice soft sided case that
offers much better protection than a padded gig bag or the last round of cases
used on the 200 non-DLX models before the switch was made, imho, but
i'd bite on the SKB for about 1/2 the bones, as it has a true hard case inner
