T5z Questions ---> Koa or Maple <---
« on: February 04, 2014, 01:20:34 PM »
Hi guys

I have decided to give it a shot at the newer T5z… but they are backordered til next week
Since I have a few days to decide I would like your take between the Koa vs. the Maple top

Questions:

1. Since the guitar is soo thin I think that the tonal differences between the two tops would be minimal right?

2. The other advantage that I might see is the resale value down the road that Koa has over maple right?

thanks for your help
regards,
Charles

Every Taylor rep I have talked to about the T5's has told me that if my biggest concern with a T5 is getting an authentic acoustic sound, go with Spruce or Koa, if my biggest concern is electric, go Maple.

FWIW, I think they both sound great and both look beautiful.

Thanks for the info

I'm going to be direct to the PA most of the time
My other cocvern is the gold hardware on the Koa
Will it tarnish soon or the gold on Taylors are better than others?

Thanks
Charles

I agree with Drock2k1 on that......

I would truly like to see a really hot Les Paulesqe twin humbuckered Taylor solid body offered. There is plenty of room in the marketplace for another mid to high end SB and Taylor could build a really nice one if they would just do it!

My T5 is a Maple top and it sounds fine on the acoustic side.  I've heard the Koa T5 and it sounded fine too.  Honestly, either one is going to do what you want.  Pick the one that has the most visual appeal to you and go for it!   ;)

Questions:

1. Anyone knows which string gauge the newer T5z comes from the factory?

2. Is the gold hardware is it any better than other plating out there; Will it tarnish as easy?

thanks

Charles, the finish on hardware (tuner buttons, pickups and covers, bridges...) can become discolored, pitted, and rubbed off. Smudges that build up over time are the biggest culprits, IMO. Regardless of your finish choice, keep 'em clean. :)
