Greetings from San Diego
« on: December 13, 2013, 07:59:01 PM »
As an aspiring player (aka, unskilled but motivated) I've been enjoying reading all of your posts over the past month. I briefly played back in the early 90's when I could only dream of owning a Taylor. I recently started playing again focusing on fingerstyle and am blessed to be playing an 812e.

This may or may not be a realistic goal, but I'd love to be able to play some of the beautiful short acoustic guitar pieces that Patrick Simmons use to have on the old Doobie Brothers albums, such as Larry The Logger, Slack Key Soquel Rag,  Busted Down Around O'Connelly Corners, and the longer song South City Midnight Lady. There are inspiring videos on YouTube of Simmons performing Larry, Soquel, and South City at the Taylor venue at this year's NAMM.

I have a good transcription of Larry The Logger from an old Acoustic Guitar Magazine.  Does anyone have good fingerstyle transcriptions of the other songs that they would be willing to share?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!  You've picked some great music to play on that 812. Saw the Doobies live  many many moons ago. They were a pretty tight band, loved their stuff. There is a great video of them performing Long Train Running on You tube...well, there are probably several. Hopefully someone can come up with the transcriptions you are seeking.

Hi Wave Rider. Welcome to the UTGF. I've always liked Patrick Simmons. "Dependin' On You" was another great song he wrote. Love the guitar solo. 8) Glad you joined us. Enjoy.

Yes, StepchildUSMC, we are close to Taylor Central, less than 15 minutes. The tour is worthwhile for any of you who are visiting San Diego. I've been out there twice over the past 20 years and plan to visit again soon. My 18 year old daughter is interested in design and jewelry fabrication  . . . and plays a Taylor  :)  She would get a lot out of seeing their processes.

I should also mention that Palomar College, 20 minutes to the north, offers a wide variety of woodworking classes(30-40), including at least a half dozen separate classes in different aspects of string instrument building. We can expect to see continuing growth in the field of guitar building in the San Diego region in the coming years.

Small world! I'm about 15 minutes to the west, in Clairemont.
