Greetings from Finland
« on: November 18, 2013, 03:35:32 PM »
Hi all!

Thanks for letting me join the forum.

After playing guitar for about 15 years I finally decided to invest for a high end guitar. I went to a local dealer to see what taylors they got there. The most interesting models in my budget range were 314ce and 416ce-FLTD (2013).
416ce-FLTD sounded nice. maybe a little bit too much bass for my taste. There were also some minor issues with the finishing. Some white paint droplets in neck. Maybe not a big deal but my opinion is that these kind of flaws don't belong to this price category guitars.
314ce sounded nice too. I think GA is more suited for my purpose. However, there were huge bear claws on the top, which prevented me from buying it instantly. I was looking a little bit more uniformity. Otherwise the build guality was superb.

I asked the dealer to get a 414ce-FLTD for a test. When it arrives I will decide which is it. 314ce or 414ce-FLTD?

BR, Joni

Welcome Joni.  Can't go wrong with either a 314 or a 414. You don't like bearclaw, but I love the uniqueness it adds to guitars. I figure wood isn't perfect and bearclaw and grain adds to its character. But, to each their own. If you don't care for it and are looking for a more conservative, consistent top, then that is what you should hold out for. I hope you find the one you are searching for. When you do, we'd love to hear about it and see pics. It will be a fun search for you.....enjoy!

tervetulleita Joni. tämä on loistava sivusto. siellä on paljon opittavaa nämä kokeneet Taylor pelaajia. useimmat meistä ovat enemmän kuin yksi merkki, mutta mieluummin Taylorin ainutlaatuinen ääni. pahoillani et välitä Bearclaw. monet meistä on nähtävyys kitara.
i do hope your search goes well. there are many fantastic guitars available out there.

Hi Joni. Welcome to the UTGF. The 314ce is sitka/sapele. The 2013 416ce/414ce Fall LTD's are cedar/Indian rosewood. Tonally, they're two different animals. Hard/Fast vs. Slow/Easy. Just something you might want to consider depending on your playing style/needs.

I'm glad you found us. Enjoy. :)

Thanks for all your replies and comments!

About my style:
I'm a fingerstyle player/singer. This is the reason why I want to try cedar/rosewood combo. According to Taylor's woodchart, this combo would give me some space in mid-range and also bring some more power for the soft fingerstyle touch. Final decision is made by my ears, but i would be happy to hear your comments about these assumptions.

I will let you know about my decision with pictures. Now I just have to wait for that test guitar to arrive.

Gotcha. The 314ce is a versatile guitar and I love the GA body. Have fun when the 414ce-FLTD arrives. :)
