I don't have much time to read for leisure/pleasure these days (6 month old son, job, college) but one of the last books I read that really sticks with me is "Tracker" by Tom Brown, Jr.

There's something about reading about the appreciation of nature, the simple things, and introspection that is refreshing in the midst of today's hustle/bustle and go-go-go.

I've picked up a bad habit of reading books simultaneously, so it's taking longer to get through them all. But here's what's currently bookmarked:

  • Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson
  • Things a Computer Scientist Rarely Tallks About by Donald Knuth
  • The Year 1000: What Life Was Like at the Turn of the First Millennium by Robert Lacey and Danny Danzinger
  • The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien

Well having given up on Pratchett's 'Unseen Academical's', for the time being, I have in the last week revisited Phillip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy. I am surprised how much I enjoyed reading it again, it must be 10 years since I last read it, and though it's considered a childrens book, I found it an engrosssing and moving read, (obviously in my dotage I'm reverting to children's literature).

Oh well, with a new film on the way, I think its time to visit the Hobbit again.

Just finished "Guitar Zero:The New Musician and the Science of Music" by Gary Marcus. The author took up guitar at what he considered the ripe old age of 40 (I just started at 55). I found his discussion on what impact learning an instrument has on the brain very interesting. Hope my brain is up to the challenge.

Besides continually flipping through W&S I just got Bob Taylor's book for my Bday (shameless personal promotion  ;D).  I'm looking forward to reading it.

hi TP516,
HAPPY  BIRTHDAY ! ! !hope you're enjoying today with family & friends :)

er, speaking of 'shameless personal promotion' :-[
one of my friends picked up a copy of Bob's book from NAMM last year for me - it's a great read, imho

he also happened to run across some guy wielding a Sharpie, so a little ink got 'spilled' on the inside ;)

the '30 years of a new American classic' coffee table book is nice too -
a lot of great pics & history in that one :D
