Hello from the U.K. Looking for a Taylor
« on: March 11, 2013, 06:19:34 AM »
Hi,
My name is Ian, and I have just joined the forum. I don't own a Taylor, but am looking to buy one soon. I'm normally an electric player (Gibson335) but have recently become interested in acoustic music. My first Taylor will be one of their lower end guitars, I have played a 110, which was very nice, but I'd also like to have a look at a 114 and 210/214, although looking at the specifications, I can't see much difference between the 100 and 200 series guitars. I am looking for a guitar with a light, bright sound, which is what attracted me to Taylors, and I'm not bothered it has electronics, because I won't use them.
If anyone has any experience of those guitars, I would appreciate hearing from them, are they worth buying, or in a few months will I find myself wishing that I'd held out for a higher end guitar than the ones that I'm looking at?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,
        Ian.

Welcome to the forum Ian.  The difference in the 100 and 200 series is that the 100 series has a Sepele b/s and the 200 has Rosewood b/s.  Both are a laminate so I not sure you will hear a difference in the two series.  That being said, Rosewood will give you more low end and more high end in a solid Rosewood b/s over Sapele.

Both woods are very good woods for guitar, but will have a bit of a different sound.

Hi Mgap, and thanks for your reply. Presumably, as the back and sides are laminate, then the difference between Sapele and Rosewood is largely aesthetic then?

Regards,
         Ian.

That is how I feel about it.  I would like to hear what others have to say.  I have owned a 110, but have never a/b'ed to a 200 series.

When I was looking at GS Minis, I played all the ones available, Blackwood, Rosewood, Maple and Sapele; the only one that sounded any different from the others was the one with the mahogany top. The different laminate covering on the back and sides did not make any difference to my ears.

Ian, depending where you are in the UK and how soon you want to get your Taylor, one option would be to attend a Taylor Roadshow. They are very informative and enjoyable events, and may help you decide which Taylor model best suits your needs.

The dates and locations have just been published on the Taylor website and there are a few Roadshows around the UK in April, May and June.

Also, it is sometimes possible to get 'deals' during a Roadshow, but I believe it is usually at the prerogative of the shop owner.

Cheers

Thanks Eddie, I'll check those out. I'd seen the Roadshows, on the Taylor site, but just assumed that they were only in the U.S.

Regards,
         Ian.

From what I have heard you won't hear much difference because they are laminite guitars. I would give a 314 a test drive. The 314 have solid wood for the b&s as well as the top. Good luck!

Hi Ian. Welcome to the UTGF.  :) I hope you get a chance to play a 114 or a 214. The "electric" player in you might appreciate the extra "horsepower" the GA body offers.

Good luck with your guitar search.
