Great question!, I never see them come up eather. My guess is there under beds, in closets and attics. The older one's (75-80) The production #s will be very small, so that ads to rarity.
I dont think they have fallen apart Bob and Kurt built them to last with there bolt on necks.

I'd love to aquire a 74-76  Fat chance the oldest one i've seen for sale recently was a 79.

This is what I was thinking... They gotta be out there someplace. Ithe oldest Taylor I ever played was a 1992 Taylor 710. I remember seeing a 1978 710 in Woods & Steel. There should be a 1974 some place. :D

I also remember Taylor making a purple guitar for Prince that was used in the Raspberry Beret video. The guitar was made in 1984 I believe but Prince does not play instruments with a brand name. The guitar was featured in a Woods & Steel . The guitar can be seen in this video being played by Wendy Melvoin.

And here are two 855s. If memory serves me correctly, the one on the left is an '82, and the one on the right is a '79:

Beautiful. I knew they had to be out there some where. I'm  thinking the older Taylor guitars are more likely to be in California or on the wst coast being that Taylor is in Cali.

Looks like you have got "Lemon Grove" guitars. Bob Taylor and Kurt may have had a hand in building your guitars.

Were are the 70's and 80's Taylors?

Part pf the problem is there were so very few made in those decades.  I know the first couple of years the annual production was in the dozens and during the next few years, annual production was in the hundreds.  I'd wager they make far more guitars now in one single year than they produced in total during the 1970's & 1980's!

I'd say that's probably a safe bet. Taylor shipped over 100,000 guitars just in 2011.

the intention of 2 ring rosette was to be more efficient/less time consuming -
back then Rothchild's had a distribution contract for a brief period of time, in which the 700s then 500s came to be

it's never too late ;)
very cool 8)
there's a 77 model hangin' around here somewhere, along with the brother to the 79 510 up there -
any chance the appointments on yours were still a 3 ring rosette (300/400 series style), black binding
chrome schaller tuners, large MOP fretmarkers, belly style bridge & a hand carved Taylor headstock inlay ?

good to see you here, kc & enjoy the place :)
