Is this a good deal?
« on: October 10, 2012, 01:15:20 PM »
I have an offer made to me right now for my 2011 614ce plus $x for a brand-new 814ce.  Is this a good deal?  The 814ce is originally what I wanted to go with my 810 but there were none available the day I bought mine.  Opinions please.

Taylor has in their public 2012 price list that there is only $x difference between a 614ce and a 814ce.  Sounds like a great deal to me.  Are the two guitars in equal condition?  If they are I would move on that.

The 814ce is brand-new in the store.  My 614ce is in perfect shape without a mark on it.

Sounds like you are getting a very good value for your used guitar, including the money saved on tax.
..go for it.

This thread illustrates the problem with not allowing price discussions.

The thread makes absolutely no sense, because there's no point of reference. When it says "I'm trading my 614ce and $XXX for an 814ce, that "$XXX" could be $200.00 or it could be $2,000". Without knowing what that amount is, it's impossible to comment intelligently.

Honestly, I wonder if that policy was put in place simply because the "other place" had it, or because someone actually believes it actually makes sense to have it, because this thread is one example of why it doesn't make sense.

Jus' sayin'...

Whatever the dollar amount is is pretty much insignificant.  Does the 814 make you happier than the 614?  Does it make you $xxx more happy?  Makes the math pretty simple.

I hate to lose money on anything but I am fully aware of the fact that once you buy something and then want to trade it, you are going to lose money on it.  That being said, an 814ce is what I originally wanted and I impulse bought the 614ce because my wife was with me and told me I could get a new guitar.  I should have just waited and bought what I really wanted but I am pretty sure that I am not the only man that has ever impulse bought a guitar and once the honeymoon was over lost money on a trade!! :)

If the 814ce makes a person happier than a 614ce, would it make sense to spend another ten grand on the 814ce? Given that you believe the amount is insignificant, perhaps you could explain why you would do it.

After all, if the amount is insignificant...

SWEET!

(Seeing the real numbers at that other site certainly helps...)

I have an 815ce I got last year (traded in a GPCPA1) that I chose over an 814ce most specifically for the florentine cut.

Enjoy your 814ce!

Actually, not true.  If an 814 is worth 10k more than a 614 to someone then so be it.  It isn't to me, but it could be to someone.  The differences in the guitars put it in the traders court to decide is it worth $xxx amount more whether that is $10 or $10k.

When I called Ted at LA Guitars and asked him about an 814ce, he told me that he couldn't match that price and then he told me after we talked for awhile that he would!  To me, it seems like he is the kind of guy who wants people to get what they want and be happy with a guitar versus just trying to make a buck!  I am just saving up the extra cash for the Florentine and then go for it!  Thanks for the advice!!

hey Tn

i think we've talked before on a few things-you have a neat "older" 810-correct?

anyways, i've owned 3 814's in the past of various years-real nice guitars. may i suggest trying to find a 816 to try out. the size difference is very little whether sitting or standing, but there is an overall tone difference in my opinion. i use to own a few different GA size taylors, now everything is GS. The GS size/shape, to my ears, just brings a lot more to the table and i honestly find little difference in the feel of the size(as if the GS were a lot larger than the GA-its only a tad larger is a few aspects).

now there is that feeling that permeates the forums that one must use Medium gauge on the GS models for them to perform correct. i'm not sure about that as i tend to use mediums or a medium/light set. i just don't care for light gauge these days-course i tend to have my instruments tuned down most of the time.

anyhow, find you a 816 and you might be in for some fun.

Tnfiddler......get that beautiful 814.  It's what you really want.  If you don't get it, you'll never stop regretting a decision to pass it up.  I don't need to know the prices to tell you that. I can easily assume the deal is reasonable to you or you would not have brought it up.  I say go for it!

Let us know and post a picture of your new 814.
