K24ce vs K14ce
« on: July 03, 2012, 07:09:53 PM »
Can anyone give me any feedback as to the differences between the koa topped K24 and the Spruce top K14.  I've got my eye on a K14 at a local shop, but I fear they may be too close in tone.  I plan on taking my K24 to compare it to, but I would like to go in with a little more knowledge from the all mighty interwebs.

Thanks,
Boone

They should sound different. The first major influencer of a guitar's sound is its construction (size, shape, bracing). The second major influencer is the top wood. Spruce sounds quite different than hardwood tops like koa. It should sound more open and a bit louder. The third influencer is back and sides wood, but this one has less effect than the other two. I'm not a huge fan of koa-topped guitars, but I do own a spruce topped koa GA that I love. Give it a try. It's not duplication in my book.
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

the all mighty interwebs ...
are you sure you really want to do that ;)

your K24ce has standard II bracing & if the K14 is 09 or newer, it will have the CV bracing -
most recently i've only been able to play the 11 Fall GAceLTD K (all koa, CV bracing, bone nut/saddle) &
compared to a 08 K26ce, to me the 11 LTD GA 'won' hands down' (depth/warmth, projection, response)

i haven't been able to compare that all koa GA LTD to a sitka top 314ceLTD (standard II bracing) yet
but i found that i did prefer the overall balance of the 314ceLTD to the 316ceLTD in the examples i tried -
the other comparison i could give a go is a 97 414K sitka (that's been played to within an inch of it's life) &
a 05 324ceL10, which has a good amount play-time on it as well, but no where near as much as the 97

i've found that a spruce top model can  have more responsiveness & seem more dynamic
overall, with a broader. more distinctive range from the bottom end to the top, especially when
the spurs are put to it & a bit more crispness or snap - koa somewhat reminds me of mahogany
with a bit of maple, the mids having a bit more focus & there not being quite as much 'air' overall

i don't know if you're thinking about A/Bing them, but perhaps you may want to bring the 614ce also -
with 11 years under it's belt, it may just 'surprise you', in terms of the contrast between 'em all (K1/24)

have a good 4th :)

it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

Thanks for the responses.  I like the tone of an all Koa guitar, but would like to add a little more low end and clarity, which I believe the sitka top would provide.  We don't get alot of Koa guitars in shops around here, so it's been hard to experience one for myself with a sitka top.  Thanks again for the input.
