Has anybody ever seen the running horses inlay in person?
« on: June 26, 2012, 06:07:28 PM »
Thru a series of events this weekend my new guitar budget has increased by $1,500 and I'm thinking my BTO 12-string may now need the running horses inlay......

Hi,

I've seen it in person in two places.

The first place was at a Taylor dealer friend store, and customer brought it in.  He said HE was the one who designed it and contacted Taylor about doing the inlay.  He said they took his sketch and made it what it became.  He said they later called him and asked if he would grant them permission to make it available to the public.

The second time I saw the inlay was on a Running Horses guitar at another Taylor dealer friend.

It looked great in both cases.  Very well done if you ask me.

I saw it back in 2003 when I bought my Pelican. (See pics below):

The inlays on both these limited models were of a very nice quality. I just liked the overall looks and sound of the Pelican more than the jumbo maple running horses in honey burst finish.
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

Wow, the pelicans are really nice, I had thought of them as I am from Florida (grew up near the beach) and spent alot of time watching the pelicans - maybe just the lone pelican on the headstock would be nice.

I was also looking at the wolf inlay, a few years ago I toured the Gibson factory in Montana and the inlay artist showed us her guitar that she had done some extensive wolf designs on, of course the wolf stirs up extreme emotions in Montana.

I'm going to the music store tomorrow to begin the process...... ;D  ;D  ;D

just wondering if the first guitar was an engelmann/cocobolo
florentine cutaway with koa binding & figured mahogany neck ???

the detail of the inlays is very meticulous, imho, as were the ones on the JDCM -
it'd be nice if a one running horse headstock inlay was offered also 8)

As long as we're on the inlay subject, how about any impressions/opinions about the "Cujo" inlay?
I've only seen small grainy photos, but it seems intriguing!

Hi MichaelW,

The first one I saw was at a shop in Albany Oregon where a guy brought it in.  He claimed it was his design that Larry Breedlove at Taylor refined.

I don't remember if he took it out of the case or not, so I don't remember the wood combo.

Saw it at the road show a couple years ago.  It is a really cool inlay and one of the few that I would consider.  It's pretty understated (compared to the Cindy inlay for example) for as detailed as it is.

Not to hi-jack the thread, but here are some  close-ups of the inlays on my Cujo14. I love the mix of inlay material: spiny red oyster shell, abalone, paua, MOP, walnut, mahogany, burled something used for Cujo, himself, formica for the bat! It's quite artistic IMO, but judge for yourself:

The original 'Running Horses' design was created by by TGF/AGF member Mike Carter.  He created the design for the guitar he ordered during the "TaylorStock" event in August of 2002.

Here's a link to all of the guitars ordered at that event.  Mike's is the last one -- Scroll all the way down.  Here, you can see in progress shots and Mike's full guitar -- Sweet!

BTW, mine is about halfway down the list - Coco/Sitka 814c.  (This is also a great opportunity to notice the advancements in digital photography technology over the past 10 years.  I think the camera I shot these pics with had a total 6 pixels.  Not megapixels, just pixels...)

Ive seen this page a few times over the years. Taylorstock produced some amazing guitars, and seems like it was a heckuva good time!
I wish they would do one now, 10 years later.. I wanna go to one!

If I was going to spend the cash on inlay, I'd get something totally unique that no one else had.  I'd then get in touch with Bill Nichols at http://www.nicholsinlay.com/.  I'm not affiliated with him in any way, but he does some pretty amazing work.  I'll bet Taylor would charge a pretty substantial premium for that, and other people have it.

Just my $.02.
