422R?
« on: June 15, 2012, 07:39:31 PM »
Hey everyone, I'm new here so don't be too harsh! haha

I am looking around at some new guitars and found a deal for a 1997 Taylor 422R online. I have never heard of this model before, and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it? I can get it for about the same price that I could get a 114 around here, so if it is on par with the other Taylor models with spruce over rosewood (700 series and up I think.. right?) then I will definitely be considering it.

Spec's and pictures wise, it looks like it would be a GREAT deal. I am just looking for a little more info since I have never even heard of a 422R, and can't really find much info anywhere online or on youtube. If I were to call the Taylor Customer Service number do you think they would be able to tell me a decent amount about it?

Thanks!

They probably could.  I used to have a '96 422M (all mahogany) that I really loved.

Hi Matt,

First off, welcome to the forum!

Yes, Taylor can tell you about the specific build-details of this guitar.  All you need is the serial number and give them a call.  These are great guitars.  And assuming all is well with it, it is a considerably "nicer" guitar over a 114 ...solid wood throughout, and aged and played well, I hope.  But as is important in these kinds of purchases, be certain you and the dealer are very clear on your terms.  A good deal is only good if nothing goes awry.  Post your results if it all works out for you!  :)

hi matt,
good to see you here :)
WELCOME !there were several different 422 (& 420) models made
during that time period (maple, pao ferro & all koa)

as much as i can remember (& in addition to the previous link)
the 422R has a sitka top ('classic', non forward-shifted bracing)
preNT mahogany neck (with headstock 'wings'), chrome Grover
tuners (most likely 14:1), all satin finish (top, sides, back & neck)

the aesthetic grade of the wood, appointments, finish & bridge style were the
only things that differed from other sitka spruce/rosewood X12 models of that era -
most recently, the closest model would have been the fall 11 412ceLTD-R

sounds like a nice guitar -
i have an older standard 412 model that i like very much

glad you found the place -
looking forward to hearing more from you

please make yourself comfortable :D

I recently joined the Grand Concert family with a '92/412 and it is very sweet.  I also have a '97/420(rosewood b/s) that is a good deal different in sound than my 410(mahogany b/s).  It is also a very fine guitar.  Combining those two models to create your 422 sounds very promising as well as gorgeous.  If it is less $ than a 110(wow!), I'd jump on it asap.  And, if you don't care to, I'd certainly be interested in it!

Good luck on this.  PLEASE post some pix if you make the purchase, as I've never seen such a model before.
