Anyone have experience with V-Picks?
« on: May 12, 2012, 02:21:16 PM »
I read about these on AGF.  I'm used to playing with thinner picks (<0.75 mm), but wondered if anyone had tried these for acoustics and what their experience was?

Yes, I like very firm picks but some of them get pricey.  Vinnie will offer free samples from time to time over at AGF or maybe if you just email him.  Not sure what the policy is over here for free samples and such.

I think that the V pick is used mostly for electric guitars.  Here is one that is also nice made of wood and very firm, I got one but never use it a much.

I've been using the "Lite Traditional" (1.5mm) for general six string strum work and leads.  I like them a lot.  To be fair, I was skeptical at first, but decided to give them a try since Vinnie was offering up a free sample pack.

The trick is to relax the right hand and let the pick flow over the strings rather having it try to plow through them.  I've also found the the picking is tighter as you don't experience the "delay" of a more flexible pick bending and passing over the string.  It took a little time to get used to the difference, but I'm sold now...

I use a V-Pick that is .75 - I like it, but if you drop it, they are hard to find (clear).  Like Steve, I have used Dunlops for a couple decades.  The difference I see between those is I have not broken a V-Pick.

I've never heard of anyone breaking a Tortex...

Now you have.  ;)  My "ol' standby," a brown tortoiseshell Dunlop broke; cracked right near the tip.  It was like losing an old friend.  I have a box of picks that I've had for at least 30 years... looked through that to see if I could find another tortoiseshell... nope.  I had some goofy floppy thin nylon things in there, some textured picks, a few old Wahbash blue... so, I got a couple V-Picks.

Not sure about all the hype, but I do find that I walk taller and women find me more attractive when I use that pick.  8)

Ditto - my waistline is shrinking, I'm growing naturally long and luxurious hair again and I've been asked to endorse a male enhancement drug -- All because I use a V-Pick!

the 'tortoise' picks are made of celluloid
which is a good bit different than tortex

they've stopped making the gator in 0.96  :(

Um, not to put too fine a point on it, but a brown tortoiseshell Dunlop guitar pick isn't a Dunlop Tortex guitar pick...

Any point is OK with me.  Well, except the one with the crack in it.  My apologies if I misspoke (miswrote?) and that tortoiseshell isn't a Tortex.  The writing on it has long since worn off... I thought it was indestructable... um, indistructa... um unbreakable.  ::)  Until it met the GSmini.  ;D

See that green pick on the left? I got a buck that says you could play that pick every day for the next five years and you break it.

You'll wear it out, but you won't break it...

A buck?  Gosh, I could buy a fraction of a V-Pick for that!  ;D  If I played my guitar every day for the next five years, I still likely wouldn't sound any better.   ;)  And I probably would have lost a bunch of picks by then.  I'm here for the fun of it, so let's all agree that you are correct.

Best wishes,
