NGD - GS Mini
« on: March 30, 2012, 01:30:27 PM »
Just received my 2010 GS Mini today!  ;D I originally bought the Martin LX1, but that was a toy compared to the GS Mini. It sounds like a much bigger guitar than it's size indicates. I got it used from a player in the AGF (thank you Diana if you are reading this) and I am very happy with it, even after only playing a few quick somgs before I had to leave and get to work. I also got the ES Go pickup, but have not had the chance to plug in yet.

I'm not sure which strings are on it and I plan to put a new set on. Any suggestions or recommendations?

Stock strings for the GS Mini are the Elixir Medium.

I'm pretty sure that's what's on it now.

Congrats Jim. Fantastic guitars, agree it's a big upgrade from the LX1.

Usually they ship with Elixir 80/20 mediums, some find these a bit bright and switch them out for the mellower PB's. Recently I've just had some uncoated D'Addario's on mine which sound great too.

PB's = Phosphor Bronze (vs. 80/20's).

I have always liked D'Addario's and am probalby going to put on a set of EJ16's.

Congrats on your new Mini.  I love mine, a surprise gift from my hubby.  I use the Elixir Meds. that it came with, because they work great for me.  I know it's a personal preference though.  I just like Elixirs.

Thanks everyone. I finally checked out the ES-Go pickup and I'm pretty sure I am going to remove it and sell it (and the V-Cable).I tried it plugged into my Fishman Loudbox Mini and VOX AGA70 with the V-Cable and a Monster Pro-Link Balanced Cable (with Audix Imedance Transformer) and it sounds good, but I really bought this guitar for traveling with and don't need the electronics for it. PLus I have two other A/E guitars and I can't really see myself plugging in the GS Mini enough to justify the ES-Go. Plus I have two V-Cables and only need one (I really don;t need that one either).

BUt so far I am very impressed with the big sound that comes out of sych a small guitar.

A day late on that - I ordered an ES-GO yesterday.  Question about your ES-GO: having read a lot of reviews about 'em, does yours buzz?  Seems that folks either love that pickup (generally for the simplicity) or hate it (generally for the buzz).

Enjoy the mini!

Best wishes,

I think that the buzz depends on the cable that is used. It seemed to buzz a bit though my Loudbox Mini using the V-Cable, but when I used a balanced cable (with impedence transformer) the buzzing stopped. I think this is a general problem with Taylor pickups. I experienced a similar buzz with the ES on my 814ce.

Thanks for the suggestion on the balanced cable, Jim.  I've not tried that with my 114ce... no buzz, but it sure seemed weak and was prone to feedback when plugged into my Bose L1.  That V-Cable looks like a good solution with the ES-GO pickup, since there is no volume (or tone) control with that pickup... unless it adds to "the buzz."

Sure enjoying the Mini.
