Now that is a stunning aray of tonewood! Absolutely Stunning! Someday I am going to get a short-scale 12-fret in Ziricote. Sure hope I can find something close to yours.

Thanks for sharing!

Anyone know what model and year this came out? Just incredible.

Sea turtles made from paua rim (a shell laminate), "green snail," and black Color Core glide on the ebony fingerboard, and a turtle and delicate-hued jellyfish drift on the back's luminous waves of maple.

I should know; I'm fairly certain it was 2003.

Actually Herb, Steve and michaelw got it right. It was 2000!

Does the guitar growl as well?

Now that you mention it, the guitar does have a nice growl in the lower register. I always thought it came from the body!

Thanks for the correction. I said I should know because I own a Gallery Series Turtle Guitar. I confused the year with one of my other Taylors which is from 2003. Before posting, I selected a bookmark I've kept of the Taylor website page describing the Turtle Guitar to verify the year but it took me to a page from Taylor's new website  about something else so I went with my memory which, as you can see, was a mistake.

No apology necessary! How do you like your Turtle? Gorgeous to look at. How does it sound (I have no maple experience as reference)?

Now that Tulip Poplar is something special. Never heard of that! At first glance, I thought it was grafted walnut. Love it! And thank you all for making me suddenly want about four more guitars, even though I;m still breaking in my new macassar/sinker GC. oh GAS, you never really go away  ???

Tulip poplar was used on the Liberty Tree Guitars...

To me, it sounds great. It may be due to the flat-sawn wood which makes it more flexible than the quarter sawn wood. Most maple backed guitars that I've played have left me disappointed but I'm very fortunate that the one I have is tonally pleasing to me.

If you are bling averse this one is not for you. Jim went nuts on this for his 25th anniversary. Ever since I saw James Taylor hug his Olson like a cherished child and make it sing the way he does, it has been in mind to own one. Sure hope that comes to pass someday. I think the SJ would be the perfect size for me.

Sycamore refers to two completely different types of trees. In Britain, sycamore refers to a variety of maple, Acer pseudoplatanus. In the U.S., the term refers to three varieties of buttonwood: Platanus occidentalis, Platanus racemes and Platanus wrightii (American sycamore, California sycamore or western sycamore, and Arizona sycamore).

My question is which kind of sycamore wood was used for this guitar (I'd have guessed it was snakewood which also can refer to three different types of trees but that is for another post):
