UTGF Like a Guitarist Crack House
« on: March 03, 2012, 08:55:46 PM »
Ok, just bare with me and also read with good humor.  Trying to be little bit funny with this post...was chuckling writing it.

It occurred to me as I've joined this group as well as the AGF just this week, having never participated in forums before, that these sites are gathering places for fine guitar addicts.  Think about it.  Dudes (and dudettes) sitting around writing about the guitars they have and the guitars they want, guitars often purchased against the wishes of their spouses (some avid guitarists are like the weekly golfer husband who spends too much time and money on golf away from his wife, at least in her eyes.)  Then we read each others posts, and we just have to have MORE MORE MORE...I feel like I've been lured into the guitar crack house of UTGF and AGF where my GS8 and GS Mini Mahogany will never be enough.  I'll certainly need to get that 614ce I've been thinking about.  Then, what's next?  A 12-string? Do I break away and buy that Martin D18v I think sound so good, too?  Then a Collings or a Bourgeous?  A BTO?  I know as long as I have my other addicts in the room I'll go further and further, never satisfied, always wanting more.  Thanks, guys!  ;)

You definitely have a point ... I know my contributions to the economy have been fueled by the constant discussions on the forums ... I am trying to go into a holding pattern with my guitar collection at this time but my visitations to the forums seem to always have me thinking about my next instrument ...  8)

I've been at TGP for the past 3 years...buying amps and electrics.  Now I've calmed down.  But started back at the AGF and now here.  Ordered a new 2012 314ce which is being delivered Tuesday.  I've been scanning the classifieds like an addict looking for crack. I need help.

 Congrats on your new guitar.

Some of us addicts have been hooked for a loooong time..
I just realized this is 30 years of being guitar obsessed for me..
But I love it, and seek no cure for the GAS!
I'm happy for the folks who find the one exact sound and guitar they have always sought..
But for me, its like food.. variety is the spice of life..
I love choices. Why settle... guitars don't mind if you drool over others too!

Having gotten married in the last year though, and starting to think about a family next, will likely be slowing the GAS down a little though.. Being single and choosing what and when to spend your $ on is definitely different than being married.. I'm learning fast..
Lol

Like all good addicts, I know how to justify my pursuits ... I always say that this is my "hobby" ... I don't spend money on any other extra curriculla things like golf or boating so I am actually saving money with musical interests ... right?   8)

Ha ha!  I knew it...a good friend of mine and I have done this to each other for at least two years now...I was looking at getting another Taylor, he got one, too...then he bought a Martin d18v, and wow, doesn't it sound like a Taylor, clean and clear?  And I wanted one of those.  Then I bought a Baggs DI and he got one, too.  Now he has the fishman DI (with the modeling) and now I'd like one of those.  Then I got a Fishman Soloamp.  Guess what happened next? Yep, he got one, too.  Then he had a K&K pickup installed in his d18v, and you know what, that's what led to my post about Taylor ES verses K&K, because his pickup sounds amazing and my gen 2 taylor es sounds pretty crappy in comparison (need the next gen i'm told).  Anyway, it all leads to this syndrome you guys are talking about, but being where I am financially at the moment, I'll just have to sit pretty with the great stuff I've already been seriously blessed with, and maybe control my cravings for more by staying out of this crack house called UTGF for a while.  If you don't see me, I'll miss you guys, but I gotta go play anyway!  Be blessed!

On the other hand, coming to the UTGF, UMGF, AGF, UBCTEXZQGF, also encourage me to practice and to try new songs. It's not all about giving me GAS. :)

i see you've found the unofficial blueridge/breedlove/bourgeois, collings/carvin/charvel
cole clark/cordoba/cort/crafter, tacoma/takamine, eastman/esteban/epiphone/esp/eko
xaviere, zemaitis, Q guitar forum too ... i thought i saw you hanging out over there ;)

Q has a very interesting custom shop/build to order options sheet list :D

seriously though, it's nice to be able to have places to spend some leisure time at
that are enjoyable & informative & if one learns something that results in them
enjoying their playing a little more, along with a few laughs, that's a good thing :)

True and I must say that the forums have educated me more than just about anything else about difference in tone woods, body shapes, general preferences etc.  So in a sense, I have become a much more informed shopper and I'm sure made better choices based on the information at the forums ... so it's not all about GAS, it is also about "fuel economy" too ... YMMV ...  8)

Don't mean to blame anything or anyone except myself for having so many guitars.......that being said, guitar forums had a whole lot to do with it!  ;)

The good thing is, they also inspire me to play these beautiful guitars more!  :)

LOL, so true!  I visit the other forums, Martin, ukulele, mandolin and if I'm not careful I get all kinds of xAS symptoms.

That said, I have learned so much and look forward to learning more, I'll just have to be careful and watch for xAS symptoms and catch them early. :D
