Tried out a 12-string today...
« on: March 01, 2012, 05:55:26 PM »
Stopped in at The Podium to visit a couple guitars I've been courting, and as I like to do I first went downstairs to warm up in a practice room with one of the lower-shelf models, still nice guitars, but sub-$1000 and the main thing is that I like to relax and get comfortable in peace and quiet, without an audience, before I head upstairs to A/B with focus.  (Between traffic and parking, I'm a bit jittery when I first arrive.)

Anyway, while in the basement I tried several Taylor's, Seagull's, Eastman's and one of the ones I picked up was a Taylor GA3e-12.
I've never even held a twelver before so it was a nice surprise.  Felt like I had my own ghostly accompaniment and really filled the entire basement with sound.  Strummed like a dream, both with a plectrum and with bare fingers, knuckles.  Not sure it would be a candidate for fingerstyle, unless I was just doing it wrong.
Seemed like the deeper four strings each had an octave string, and the B and e had twins.  I brought along a capo today and the GA3e-12 sounded great all the way up the neck, with decent intonation.  I bet it'd sound hypnotic in lower, open tunings, but I wouldn't know the first thing about tuning the octave strings to pitch, so I didn't try.
All in all, was a reaaaaally nice guitar, for an excellent price.

The 12-string didn't sidetrack me from my original mission, but I could certainly see adding one like that to the stable someday.
(Still haven't made a decision about a 12-fret or other small bodied guitar, darn, I'll just have to go back again soon!)

Glad you liked the sound of the Taylor 12.
I have a GS-K-12 on order and can't wait to play it. One of my first guitars as a kid was a 12-string...but I recall the action on it was terrible. Things have come a long way since then. Fill the room is right. Some of those big bodied 12-strings can overpower a small playing group.
Yes, the E-A-D-G strings are all octaves, B-E are twins.
So, have you fallen in love with any of the guitars upstairs, or are you still "dating"?

I'm smittin', bad, but haven't decided.  There's a wonderful Kennedy OM size Lutz/Mahogany that is out of this world, and a Martin 00 and 000 all mahogany 12-fret that has also got my heart a twitter.  If the Kennedy was a 12-fret, the decision would already be made, as that is what I set out to shop for over the past few months.  But, then again, if I like the tone/feel of the 14-fret Kennedy I may be making a mistake by sticking to my 'plan'.
Gonna have to make a few more visits, I'm sure.

Oh, if only funds would allow!  But, you are right, it's a hard sound to forget, and I'm quite sure someday a 12-string acoustic will find follow me home!

I just received the 355 I bought used for $X000, and I agree, those 3-series 12 strings are superb. Keep your eyes peeled – good deals are to be found!

(Ooops – Sorry about the price, folks!)

the action on my new GA4-12 is what sold me...frets  as easily as a 6 string...at concert pitch or down to DD.  I was buying another brand until I picked it up.

I have a 12 string also. A 1969 Ventura/Bruno.Sounds good, but you can drive a bus under the strings. Great Wallhanger though.
That's a piece of shrink tubing hanging from it. ;)

I've owned a Taylor 455 and a Guild F512, and they are among the top five guitars that I regret selling. Fingerstyle is very doable on a 12-string, and it sounds great as does a simple strummed chord. The GA3-12 sounds amazing, and is probably all the 12 string that must of us will ever need...
