3-piece backs???
« on: February 21, 2012, 06:08:29 PM »
My new 614ce that I bought this weekend from Gruhn guitars in Nashville, has a 3-piece back with two black lines defining the edges of the center-section.  When you look on Taylors website the 614ce page doesn't show that.  Do 3-piece backs have to be ordered that way for a particular shop or do they just randomly make them?  Hopefully someone can answer my question.

Can't answer your question Fiddler, but my 2010 GS6 doesn't have those lines.

What does the Taylor tag say on the inside? I am guessing that was a modify a model 614ce that Gruhn ordered that way.  Lots of dealers with Taylor clout are able to order lots of variations of standard models, even with minor options that are not a part of the modify a model option such as the black lines.

By the way that is a gorgeous guitar!!!!!

I'm not sure as to if it's a special order or not, but normally, 3 piece backs are made bc the two outside planks of wood weren't large enough as a pair to have a normal 2 piece back.

Personally...I love both the 2 piece and 3 piece backs.  Your 3  piece maple guitar is stinking GORGEOUS!   8)

Thanks for the compliments!!!  I originally went in looking for another dread that had the expression system and they didn't have any, so the salesman brought out a brand-new 714 that they had just got in the day before for me to check out and while it sounded great, the new dark look and the little burst on the front just didn't do ANYTHING for me!!!  So I started checking out the rest and then saw this little jewel hanging on the wall and thought, that's a looker!!  Then I took it in a little soundroom and it was a "POW" moment!!!  This thing just rocks!!!  It may not have the bass my 810 has but it has everything else and then some!! I wasn't even ready for the projection this thing has got!! I guess they aren't kidding when they say maple is the brightest tonewood!!!  I think it's just a great addition to my collection!!!

it's a backstrip purfling line
some have them

some don't

this one (a 2000 LOTF 414MAce) did not have inner backstrips, just horizontal back braces

you could call Taylor customer service with the serial # & they can tell you if a 3 piece back
was a listed option on your guitar & if it wasn't, then they just decided to build it that way :)

congrats again, on a nice guitar :D

Interesting...I never noticed one way or the other.  I had to go take a look just now to confirm.

Both my 2007 614ce and my 2010 612ce have two-piece backs WITH the black purfling line.

My 2007 BT3 Baby Maple does not.

Talked to Chris at Taylor today and he ran the history on mine and it is just a standard 614ce.  He stated to get the back to match the way they wanted it to, it required a 3-piece back and sometimes they just choose to use the purfling and mine has it.  So, mystery solved!  Time to play it now and enjoy it!!  :D

Glad you are enjoying your guitar! The wood is beautiful. When I did my 614ce as a modify-a-model, I didn't know they offered different types of maple. Mine had the tiger striped (flame I think it's called). If I had known, I would have chosen the type of maple you have. :)

I've had two modify-a-model Taylors and neither had any info on the label or included with the serial number that it was a modify-a-model. It would be nice if they did, though. ;)

Thanks!  I am loving this guitar!!!  I think I actually like the sound of this one better than I do my 810!  I can't wait until this maple starts aging in and the true sound of this guitar starts coming out!  Time to set it in front of my subwoofer and let the vibrations do their magic!!  I like the maple in this guitar a LOT, but I am a big fan of flamed maple too!  Especially, in the back, tailpiece and chin-rest of my fiddle:

The picture doesn't show it well but my 88 K22 has Black-White-Red-White-Black purfling between the pieces. I like it.  However some backs I like better without any purfling.
