Controller for old taylor academy 12e
« on: January 13, 2025, 09:12:42 PM »
Hello, I would like to upgrade the controller for my old Taylor Academy 12e guitar, which uses the button battery system. I see that there are many more modern controllers introduced on the market. Is it possible to upgrade and install one of these newer controllers on my guitar? If so, what should I pay attention to during the replacement process to ensure compatibility and not affect the sound and value of the guitar? Thanks.

Marcel, by "controller" do you mean the pickup system?  Older A12's should have the ES-B system, which is an on-board preamp with volume and tone controls and uses an under-saddle transducer (UST).  Does your guitar have a barn door side port for the preamp, or three buttons on the upper bout near the neck?  I do not own an A12, but have played them nahy times in stores, hence the questions.

It is possible to swap out the pickup system for something else.  Some systems will be better, some may be worse in terms of tone.  I caution you against sending it to Taylor for any change.  They will try hard to upsell you to adding the ES2 system.  Many of us do not like how that system performs, and the modifications involved are irreversible.  Many have been happy by changing to a JJB or a K&K sound board transducer (SBT) system.  That has a sensor glued underneath the top instead of a piezo strip under the saddle.  SBT's typically sound more natural but are more prone to pick up body noises such as tapping or rubbing against clothing.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

I used to have one of the first year of the A12e.  If you sent it to Taylor they would be unlikely to try and upsell you to ES2 because no A12e has ever been shipped with an ES2 system, they have always been routed for the ES-B system.

They might try to sell you the new version of the ES-B system, but it kind of looks like that might even be routed differently.

You could probably put whatever you want into the guitar depending on who you talk to and how much you're going to allow them to cut up the guitar.

Personally I'd stick with what it has unless Taylor can put the new ES-B into it.   The new ES-B has Bass/Mids/Treble/Volume controls + a tuner.   ES-B equipped Taylors still have a "behind the saddle" transducer like ES2 rather than an "under the saddle" transducer like almost all other pickup systems.   Unless you really did a lot of work to the bridge it seems like a Taylor system is going to work best.

But I would still just say leave it alone, it's not like there's anything wrong with what is in the guitar.. if it doesn't sound the way you like when plugged in I would worry about the amp selection and/or pedals/interfaces/DIs, there is a lot that can be done with all that.   The watch battery setup isn't *that* bad.   At least in the US those batteries are available everywhere.

Leave it alone… or yank it and have a K&K install.

I really dislike any extra stuff in my guitars, but if an ES is working I would learn to use it.

If not working, I would opt for a K&K which is passive and needs NO battery.

Cheers
