It's that time of year again... ideas for Spring Limiteds? :)
« on: February 15, 2012, 05:58:12 PM »
It sounds like there will be a Builder's Reserve guitar/amp pairing quarterly, so I imagine that will come out along with the Spring Limited lineup. The first guitar/amp pairing was flamed mahogany and maple, so I wonder if they'll go with something darker like one of the rosewoods as a base.

I imagine they'll do something special with either the 700/800 series, maybe doing a run with Madagascar rosewood or something.

I'd like to see them give the xx3 acoustic series some love, maybe do some sunbursts or something, or do an all-gloss mahogany run.

Or, I'd be very much a fan of a limited edition of acoustic series GC3 or GC4 12-fret. I bet they'd sell a lot of those.

What do you think?

All mahogany or cedar/mahogany or engelmann/mahogany 12-fret GA.
Minimal "bling" - focus on the woods, a nice hardwood rosette with matching binding, overlay and wedge.
That'd be my vote!

with the old cedar/rosewood 700 series gone, it'd be cool to see a 400 series ltd in cedar and rosewood

I like all of your ideas.  In the "Ask Bob" column a few issues back in Wood and Steel, Bob mentioned that Taylor would be coming out with a Ltd GSmini in solid wood with binding, etc.  I'm looking forward to seeing what may come of that.

Ah yes! We had a GS Mini thread going a while back and I think you're right -- it won't be long before we see Spring/Fall Limited Minis with upgrades and BTO options. If the scale length was just a bit longer (or even if the fretboard was a tad wider) on the GS Mini I think I'd be playing one at home right now. Like you, I'm excited to see what they do -- it's a fun size for a guitar and fits right in with the resurgence of small-body guitars that seems to have been going on in recent years.

ataylor,

I know what you mean.  I'd really like to get a GS mini, but I don't like the narrower nut width.  I'm hoping the ltd models have the option of a wider nut or that the GS mini joins the modify-a-model program and it could be ordered with a wider nut.  I can't see spending the kind of $$ a BTO GS mini would likely cost for this type of guitar though.

I think you're right -- I'd like to see them offer some additional options without going the full BTO route. I played another one today and it's just a little too cramped for me to want to get one. Everything else about the guitar is awesome though. Well, except maybe the synthetic headstock overlay. That would be nice as a "modify" option -- I'd pay a modest upcharge for a wider neck and/or longer scale along with a wood headstock overlay.

I think that fall-solid offerings will probably have to come through the Spring/Fall Limiteds so they can do a large batch all at once to keep costs a little more reasonable. But who knows.
