Odd question....
« on: February 12, 2012, 06:14:48 PM »
Does anyone know if you can fit a Taylor NS neck on any other steel sting Taylor body since they all use the NT neck connection? Odd question I know but I know someone who has a NS32 that has a trashed body and I was thinking of trying to find a GA body with a trashed neck and make a Frankenstein guitar. I figure since the NS neck has the truss rod it would be suitable to take steel strings if I change out the tuners. Can anyone think of a reason this would not work?

I would prefer (for my own knowledge) the long answer. Why do you say no?

Well, for a few reasons:

For starters, you can't simply change the tuners. The Nylon Series tuners require a different size hole for the capstan than is required for the steel string slot head tuners.

The NS32ce nut width is 1-7/8". A 314ce is 1-3/4".

The NS32ce heel is going to be too short, because the GA body is deeper than an NS32ce body. Ergo, the holes for the neck bolts on the neck heel won't be aligned with those on the body.

The NS32ce neck meets the body at the 12th fret. On the 314ce it's the 14th fret.

Technically, yeah, you could affix the NS32ce neck to a GA body, but it would be unplayable...

My apologies, I caused a bit of confusion. I have a neck from a NS34ce not a 32ce. I understand about the nutwidth as I have had several of each models in the past and I prefer 1 13/16" or 1 7/8" nutwidths even on my steel strings. Also, you can change the tuners out and I have done it several times using the bushings that come on steel string martin slothead guitars. I guess that leaves the mounting configuration for the NT neck on the NS34ce vs. 314ce. What do you think about this configuration now that I have cleared up the confusion....still a no go or would it be feasible? Thanks for the replies...

i believe the body being used would need to have had a 'wide-neck' (1 7/8") also -
the pocket in the neck block is carved to accommodate the wider fretboard, as
the wood on a NT neck extends under the end of the fretboard to the 19th fret

also, the difference in string tension is considerable & i am uncertain if the
truss rod system in the NS neck is identical to the steel string & capable of
counteracting/withstanding/tolerating the tension from a steel string set ???

d'addario pro arte extra hard tensions, tuned to concert pitch on a
25.5" scale are just under 90 lb total tension, 80/20 lights are about
160 & silk & steels are very close to splitting the difference at 122  :-\

whether 122 lb of tension will be enough to drive the top effectively or,
if 160 lb will cause too much stress on a NS neck, i really don't know :-[

good luck, if you decide to accept this mission -
when all is said & done, i hope it works the way you'd like it to :)

nothing ventured, nothing gained ...
other than that, i got nuthin (sorry) :-X

Thanks for the replies guys. I thought this might be a neat project but I think I will pass on it after hearing everyone's thoughts.
