Looking for a Soft Guitar Bag 2015 618e
« on: September 07, 2021, 10:03:29 PM »
Anyone know what kind of after market soft guitar case would fit a Taylor 816e ?  Width is almost 5 inches.

Thx

I tried to post earlier from my ipad. I was going to suggest the new Taylor hard bag that I think fits the GA/DN/GO sizes? I saw one and it was nice. Access also makes nice bags of varying protection levels that fit well with my Taylors, which are smaller.
Mods, any hope to figure out why we can't post from iPads? Thanks.

I called Taylor support and a few musics stores in my area about any soft bag.

Taylor support advised they didn't have a softcase specifically for the 816e but I could buy a Grand Orchestra (GO) soft case and that a similar form factor should fit the guitar.  That is what I was told, so I can't confirm if it actually fits.  If you are in Canada, Taylor is willing to ship but costs won't be cheap.  And possible import fees.  So $99 + Tax + shipping + import

Shout out to Adam Bernal at Taylor Guitar support for his help.

I also called up Cosmo Music Store (Spoke with Zach) and was told it may fit into a generic jumbo soft case but they didn't have any inventory.  He said a more expensive case might fit which was the Levy's Leathers CPS20-BLK/GRY Polyester Acoustic Guitar bag.

But of course, only way to really know is bring the guitar down and try it but of course no stock.

From what I can tell, the guitar's body bottom's depth is approximately 5"

If it came down to those 2 options only, price wout be a huge factor.

Look Up Gator ...they make superb and rugged bags that offer great protection for the dollar (I've owned two in the past before going to Mono ...the Gator stuff is great).  If you order from GuitC. or Sweetwater you can always return w/o penalty so maybe that's an option for ya, as well! :)

A Mono Vertigo "dreadnought" case will fit your guitar. I have shoehorned my old LKSM 12 string JUMBO in one, and my Grand Orchestra fit great.

You want the one with the "boot" on the butt. Loads from a vertical position and has great padding, neck support and comfy backpack straps. I have used my first one for hundreds of gigs now, and it is in perfect shape. I am careful with it, as it now houses my custom John Kinnaird!

Good luck in your quest and enjoy the GO!

You have a typo.

816 is a Grand Symphony

618 is a Grand Orchestra

Either will fit in the Mono Vertigo

Cheers

I love Mono cases.  I definitely liked my old Gators as they are great bang-for-buck protection, but Mono is top shelf protection and utility (no experience with Reunion Blues but they get the same kudos, as these two makers seem to be the go-to gig bags at this markedly higher price tier).

Paul is right on about Mono quality.  That said, if even considering a Mono I would personally look into the M80 over the Vertigo for an acoustic.  The vertigo is awesome for electrics IME, and the "boot" really offers superb protection at the bottom, but this is more a benefit to electrics as they are heavier; with a much lighter acoustic guit, I think the boot's benefits are likely moot.  Personally, I wouldn't want to be sliding my acoustic in/out of a Vertigo's opening which seems like an invitation to surface abrasions.  Not wholly convinced about this, mind you, but given how my electrics slide in/out of a Vertigo, I'd not want to do the same with an acoustic, let alone a larger body like a GO.  The M80 unzips and opens conventionally which, in my opinion, is "safer" for an acoustic guitar's finish.  And yes, I absolutely love my M80 for my acoustic use.  Both are clearly Mono quality, and this all IMO anyway. :)

I've tried most of the top-shelf gig bags, and I think the Mono M80 is a clear winner.  No other bag I've tried offers quite as good a combination of protection, sturdiness, and utility.  Even my uke got a Mono!

Once I tried to put a GS into my Taylor hard bag (designed for the DN and GA sizes).  It fits in the case, but the zipper was stressed way more than I like trying to close it, so that is not recommended.  There is no way that a GO / x18 body would fit.  I have never owned a GO or a GC body.

I happen to have a nice generic gig bag obtained from Musician's Friend at least 15 years ago, and it was even generously sized enough to hold my jumbo 615ce at times.  No brand name is available, sorry.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

What Earl said:

I put my grand Symphony size guitars into a Taylor grand Auditorium sized tan hard bag for about a year. Eventually, as Earl expected, my zipper failed.   I kept a close eye on it, as I expected problems eventually. The failure was very gradual, as the stitching let go around the zipper very slowly.

I probably could've fixed it with gaffers tape, but why bother?
