Just got this Academy Series A12e, and I really like it!

- very comfortable to play
- the neck is as you would expect- awesome!
- sounds better than I expected, plenty of unplugged volume
- definitely is loaded with Taylor tone, including what I call that "Taylor sparkle"
- ES-B pickup is OK

It is really fun to play, and sounds balanced and focused. In short, highly recommended!

Anyone else have thoughts on the Academy Series?

I think it's an excellent guitar in a body shape and price point Taylor should have offered years ago.

I played one when they first came out and thought they were fun guitars. Congrats, the top is cool.

We got one(my sons) as a BOGO for a great price with my K24ce BE. It is a surprisingly nice little guitar and a joy to play. I would think it would also make a great travel guitar like the GS mini because in its bag it doesn

I have played a couple of them, and they are fine.  Since I already owned a 114ce when the Academy series came out, there wasn't much need to duplicate that end of the spectrum.  I only wish that we could have gotten guitars of this high quality and budget price point when I started playing seriously in the early 80's.....  I have certainly paid more $$$ for less guitar.  Congrats!

Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.

I agree. I wish I had had this choice or a GSM, when I started in 1973. However, given how conservative my folks were, I probably would have still ended up with a Harmony Stella. :-\  But, I do appreciate the fact that they supported me in learning by paying for guitar lessons. So, all is good...it turned out fine for me.

I still have my Sears Silvertone folk 000 model that was a  Christmas gift in 1968.  I have done considerable work to it (re-fret, added pearl dots, double-width compensated saddle, Gotoh tuners) so it is a far better playing guitar than when it came out of the factory.  It has a solid birch top and a funky ladder-braced tone which is enjoyable.  It still hangs on my office wall and gets played from time to time.  Since everyone likes pictures:

I had a 12e for a while and found the action to be higher than I liked. I used a combination of truss rod adjustments, saddle sanding and nut reslotting to finally get it where I wanted it.

They are great guitars. I hope you enjoy yours.
