Title: NGD: Quilted Maple 12 Fret Taylor BTO
Post by: davwir on April 13, 2012, 03:05:28 AM
Been super excited about getting this one, and it finally arrived today!
Way exceeded my expectations in both sound and looks!

Taylor BTO Custom 12 Fret GA, AA Quilted Maple, Engelmann top, Cocobolo binding, flamed maple neck, and red purfling (I actually had to get special approvals for the purfilng, and they don't believe a maple with red purfilng has ever been done before)..
It has tremendous clarity, bass, and warmth..
Thanks again Ted at LA Guitar Sales.
Blondes do have more fun!

Yikes! A Blonde bombshell!

What a beautiful guitar. Now you have 2 guitars I want!

Very nice 12-fret. I absolutely love a Taylor 12-fret. Nothing like it!

Congrats Dave!

WOW.  That is beautiful.  As said before "a blond bombshell"  is appropriate.  I like the red purfling, it really stands out and calls attention the guitar.  Naturally the maple is gorgeous.  The cocobolo binding I truly appreciate, I like it when the sound hole is trimmed out, as yours is.  The other thing I like is what you did by having the fingerboard not have bling(not saying I don't like fingerboards with design)because it just did not need it.  The neck is one of the best pieces of maple I have seen.

The only thing I would change is the TRC, I think I would have it be invisible.  If I had the opportunity to build a guitar of this standard I would have it with a 3  piece back, I like the visual effect of the three piece back.

Overall I think it is fantastic.  It sure would be fun to give this one a test run.  Congratulations.

That is a gorgeous guitar.  I love the Cocobolo binding in contrast with the maple.  One would imagine the 12-fret body gives the maple some punch, while retaining its sweetness.  What a great spec.

congrats :)

i don't remember seeing red purfling done on a natural maple guitar -
there were maple 600LTDs in 02 with coco headstock/bridge, rosewood binding
03 600 SPEC & L3s (coco headstock/miniwedge, rosewood binding, ab top)
& 09 LTDs with koa binding & all had black purfling, if i recall correctly

looks like the heel. neck & headstock are a matched set also &
they are still doing Custom Shop labels ... nice :D

enjoy 'er  8)

I had a BTO on the road once that was quited Maple with the curly Maple neck. I'm not sure I'm completely sold on the look but, I gotta' say, it looks pretty good here...

Very beautiful!  Isn't it cool to see what choices people make for BTOs?  No way I can afford such a guitar but it's awesome that Taylor offers such a service.

(BTW, it looks like it's time to clean the chip in your camera.  I get those little gray dots like those all the time and it drives me crazy!  Very nice photos though!)

One of the things they don't list on the build sheet, but seem very happy to accommodate if you ask for, is allowing custom text on the label.. This the 2nd BTO they I have spec'd, and I did it for both, you just get a Custom Shop Label. No charge. Kinda cool to know, for anyone else doing a BTO who might want an even more "personalized" experiecnce!

I kinda agree on the TRC actually, Maple seemed better in theory than in reality.
The dealer is getting me an ebony one to match the headstock for it today, actually, I think that may look a bit nicer..

I mentioned this on the other forum, but might be worth restating here.. One of the other amazing things about this one was it was really not that pricey at all for a custom guitar.. Probably far under what most would expect.
I did not do a cutaway, inlays, or ES, which helped keep costs down too..
And AA Maple is not an expensive upgrade at all, compared to some of the rarer woods like Cocobolo, Madagascar, or Macassar..

Wow, huge congrats on that beauty!!
Not to mention that yours could have been my RT's soul-sister!  Mine is likewise a GC bod (style-2) with AAAA quilt b/s in natural fin, coco binding, highly flamed neck, engel top, and gotoh 510s, and you have a blank fretboard.  Just gorgeous, and your red purf really pops.  Only a few aesthetic differentiates our guits ...uncanny!  And that yours is a 12 fret makes it an extra special Taylor.  I totally hear you on the "trememdous clarity, bass, and warmth" ; it's an amazing tone whose sound defies what one "thinks" of maple on a small body.   Enjoy it ...more than drop-dead gorgeous but a sonic stunner, I am sure!

well Edward.. it looks similar, because yours WAS the inspiration! I knew after seeing yours I wanted Quilted Maple, Coco binding, non cutaway, for sure! And it was too late to order R Taylors, so BTO was the way to go..
Mine is not a GC though, its a 12 Fret GA

Awesome! That's a nice one -- enjoy. If I get another Taylor it will be a no-cutaway 12-fret.

Is that a new label I see inside the guitar? Looks like they're personalizing the BTO labels. Good move if so.

Stunning!
I seldom see a maple BTO, congrats!

I think this is the first time I see a 12 fret Taylor with standard headstock...love it!
BTO option only?

BTW, if anybody has 2012 BTO Excel, could you pm me my way?

Went up yesterday. I'd like to see Taylor do this more often -- feature outgoing BTO guitars on either their website or Facebook page (or both).

Fabulous, just fabulous! I'll bet that it sounds similar to a Lowden F35 I used to own with a european spruce top and quilted maple back and sides. My only reason for parting with it was Lowden's typical clubby neck growing a bit uncomfortable for me - but I loved its sound - one of the best maple guitars I ever heard. Enjoy your new baby- congrats!

Stop.....don't stop......stop......don't stop! You're killing me.....and I just got my 812ce a month ago.  I am really drawn to blonde guitars anyway.  Until I saw your pictures, I had my GAS totally under control...really....I did.  Now it's coming back and it's your fault!

Your new 12 fret is just a knockout,  just stunning.  Personally, I love the look of maple and its clear note separation and tone.  I almost went the maple route, but really wanted a little different tone, although I like the sound of maple. The maple on yours is just gorgeous. We've all seen some really special maple coming out of Taylor but I think yours has raised the bar.

Anyway, I congratulate you on your excellent taste and specs!

I really don't need another guitar.....really, I don't.

Indeed Go Navy.
You know Go Navy I have read on this forum a firmly agree with it" You can not stop the onset of GAS" we all get it when we see beautiful guitar like the Maple beauty.

Navy.. Im just "passing GAS".. Lol... It was done to me with quilted maple, and I am now paying it forward.. The Englemann is really sweeter than expected .. And it actually cost less than you might think.. There's always room for one more, if you love it, I say go for a build!

Just saw and commented on the Facebook page (thanks for linking that) ...seems that Dave's guitar is getting lots of love, and well deservedly so, IMHO!

Only one gripe for me on that page is they only hint at the beauty of the back with that 1/4 shot.  They should have gotten a full-back shot to illustrate the depth and consistency of the quilt.  Small potatoes, I know, but wood that nice needs to be showcased :D
Congrats again, Dave ...you have to be one proud papa :)

yeah, when I was playing it last eve, I couldn't help notice the quilt is actually even far nicer than the pictures show.. Its extremely "dimensional" and has almost 3d depth in person.. And yeah, not sure why they used even "smaller" versions of the shots.. (they still have it labeled as a GC incorrectly on a few of them too, lol!).. Small potatoes, as you said.. As of last eve, the album had 850 "likes" already in a day!

Now that you've got the guitar in-hand, I wonder if you can tell us about that new soundhole label that your guitar has. I've never seen it before. Did they give you a choice between the standard label and the personalized one you ended up with? I'd definitely go for a label like yours myself, but wonder if others who seem to cycle through guitars would be worried about that affecting resale value. Is Bob's signature printed or signed? Anything else noteworthy about the label, case candy, etc?

Just curious. Glad you're enjoying the guitar!

The label is not typical for BTOs. But I asked for some custom text on the 2 builds I have ordered myself, and they happily accommodated it on Custom Shop labels.
Possibly an issue for anyone worried about resale value, which I was not.
They did it free, as well; I think it really adds to the customized personalization of a guitar, personally!

That's very cool. I wonder if they'd ever list it as a standard BTO option -- choice of standard label or personalized custom shop label.

Yeah.. I think they should photograph and post ALL BTOs too!

That would be a tremendous amount of work.

A few things factor into it. One, Taylor employs two photographers. There two photographers are already always busy shooting for Wood & Steel, the website, etc.

Second, Taylor builds a lot of BTO's. When you couple that with the fact that there are only twp photographers on staff, and it becomes pretty much an unworkable scenario...
