No c and No e - Basic Form
« on: November 14, 2016, 04:29:43 PM »
My first Taylor, my 2002 414, has no cutaway and no electronics. I'll call it "basic form" (had to come up with some term....is there a better term to define these? Maybe Purely Acoustic?).

My 414 is my workhorse. I have gotten a few ce's and e's since then. But, I'm going full circle.....my last Taylor will surely be another basic form Taylor ;D.

Anyone else loving these Taylors?

I've narrowed my guitars down to three pure acoustics - 324, 524, and 814. Wouldn't have it any other way....

CONGRATS ON 4,500 POSTS, SF ! ! ! :)when i started out (it'll be 15 years next march), i was all about the
X14ce model & it wasn't until i picked up a jksm that i considered
the no c shape (the jskm had a fishman matrix UST, no onboard EQ) -
there's a 97 414, 97 414k & 98 414 hanging out here &
the last 1 i picked up was a 13 jewel signature series BT1,
so i guess that, in a way, i've come around full circle too

the acoustic series was around from 07-12, which is
how the GA started out in 94-95 & the GS in 06, before
they were added to the numbered series (X14, X16)

i've been thinking about a 320 or 618, but the d2 premier &
walnut j15 are going to have to hold me over for quite a while -
gotta put new strings on those bad boys when i get home
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

Thanks Michael for the honorable mention. Yes, I do love non-cutaways even though I have added after market pickups to 4 of my 7 keepers. Who knows? Some day, I may even remove those pickups and go basic again!
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

Craig
I have not found a cure for GAS, sorry. I am (was) content with what I have. I played a 914ce this summer, but did so with my husband. The rosewood was nothing like I currently have. With my fingerpicking, it was really barking, especially when I played some of our bluegrass tunes. And wow, was that arm bevel comfy! My husband's comment, "if you don't get one, I will do it for you". I tried to tell him I didn't NEED another guitar (but that would be a nice addition to our little bluegrass group). So, I think a 914 may be in my future.

That was my guess, when you commented about bevels being comfy. The 900s are definitely not just for looks, you're getting a better tone machine for the money. Maybe for Christmas?  8)

I can't live without the "c", just play "up there" enough that it comes in handy.

Not for Christmas. Probably some time next year. I agree, I like having the variety of c's and e's, giving me various options and having the bases covered, so to speak. But, I'm really looking forward to this one being a "clean" acoustic like the 414.

My custom GC has a great "e" compromise: preamp with no controls (wouldn't want to mar the beautiful AA Rosewood).  For volume control--on those very occasional occasions where I need to amplify--I use a VC cable.  I do sometimes regret that this 12-fret instrument lacks a cutaway.

Here's a truth on the "e" part. ES(X) is usually fine for amplifying - running into a PA or amplifier for a live audience, but there's nothing like miking an acoustic for recording.

I think when god plays guitar, he picks up an 814ce.  A monkey wearing a blindfold couldn't make that thing sound bad.

I expect my playing falls somewhere in the middle of that given range...
