About to buy a new 814ce?
« on: August 08, 2013, 11:34:48 PM »
After previously playing acoustic stuff (folk/rags) most of my life, (yes I'm old!) I moved to playing in a couple of rock n roll bands over the past twenty years, occasionally using my '86 Ovation Legend (what a thing to admit on a Taylor site) for acoustic numbers. I then started using a PRS Hollowbody II for the acoustic stuff and have been happy with it for its practicality through amps (Axe FX2 / FRFR monitors.) A couple of weeks ago, I passed the acoustic room in GC and got sucked in by some invisible force. Played some Martins and Gibsons and then moved to the Taylor's. Since then I tried an 814, amongst others elsewhere, and now just have to have an 814ce for its tone and feel. So I'm waiting for my local acoustic store to get it in. I've been itching to play acoustic stuff, folk / rags / bluegrass etc. with some other players, and that is my justification to add another guitar to my collection. I hope to be a fully paid up member of this community in a week or so. (I have a very tolerant wife!) Anyone think this a dumb choice? (Guitar-wise, not marriage-wise!) Should I let the impulse fade away? Thanks for any advise.

Hi Unwinpr. Welcome to the UTGF.  :) In 1980 I bought my first acoustic/electric, an Ovation 1612.  ;) Congrats on the impending NGD (New Guitar Day). Your UTGF membership is already approved !!!  Enjoy our best enabling, rationalization, and justification techniques.  ;)

Welcome and congrats....a 814 is a super choice for a Taylor. Warning though, it probably wont be your last Taylor.....especially with enablers like us.

Welcome Unwinpr!

That 814ce is calling you and that is the only reason you were drawn into the acoustic room at GC. You will love anything/everything Taylor!

The 814 unseated my "favorite", a guitar I have owned for 47 years (there are plenty of us here who are "seasoned").  Also plenty of us who understand the situation.  "Dumb choice"??  Not a chance!

Keep us posted.

Thanks for the comments and support. A great group, although as members of a Taylor forum I might question your objectivity. I will be showing these posts to my wife as evidence of the need for this acquisition. I now wait for the store to call and tell me it's arrived. It's like waiting for the arrival of a new baby, but a lot cheaper! (Maybe I won't show my wife this post after all ;))

of the guitar...of the guitar, not the wife. the 814ce is a wonderful instrument...by the way, have you trien the new GO's yet?

Stepchildusmc, no I haven't. When I was trying most of the Taylors I wasn't familiar with the Taylor number system and didn't try the big guitars. Enablers! This is a very dangerous site to hang out! I haven't even acquired my 1st Taylor and you are enticing me into a second, or are you suggesting I might like the GO's even more than the 814ce?

The 814ce is a great all-purpose acoustic. Tell your wife that you'd have to buy 3-4 acoustics to cover all the playing styles (folk, rag, rock, etc.) that the 814ce handles with ease. In that perspective, it's a bargain! Welcome aboard...

Thanks, my enthusiasm grows with every supportive post. Now I just have to wait and see how the actual guitar plays when it comes into the store. I don't have another 814 to compare side-by-side. Any comments on typical variances between one new 814ce and another?

Taylors are probably the most consistent acoustic guitars out there, so the differences will be small and really up to the individual taste as to which might be preferred over the other.

Hi and welcome to the forum! 814ce is a fantastic choice (well I can't be objective since I got one on my sig). Here's a few threads that talk about the 814ce:

from capt jim's NGD - http://www.unofficialtaylorguitarforum.com/index.php?topic=2440.0
an 814ce v 914ce comparison thread - http://www.unofficialtaylorguitarforum.com/index.php?topic=1443.msg13153#msg13153
and my own NGD, my very first taylor btw! - http://www.unofficialtaylorguitarforum.com/index.php?topic=2520.msg24978#msg24978

like they say around here...we are enablers!  ;D
