Grand Pacific 517 available at Sweetwater now
« on: April 04, 2019, 05:09:00 PM »
I see that Sweetwater now has the GP 517 in stock after a long drought. I have no interest in the company, but know there are a few of you interested in this model.

Wow. I got an alert this morning that the 517 was in stock, but checked a minute ago and they are out of stock again. That was fast.

I am really really really looking into getting one, Spring expenses now but soon after. I do believe to be one of the best guitars out there.

This one may be another hit for Taylor, especially given the general tenor and feedback on non-Taylor sites I've read.

Witness: the GO did not take off (man you can find those relatively cheap now); the AP bracing was no ground breaker to the marketplace; the revoiced 800s --then 600s-- made some splash but not many non-Taylor folks were smitten enough, and the V-bracing made waves initially, but even the factory had to walk back some of their marketing language.  The last serious market boom Taylor made --in my estimation-- was the GSmini, and it still enjoys significant popularity, even with non-T players, which is part of the "real" test of genuine market impact.

So this new dred may be it; time will tell all.  I sure as heck don't need one, but as an owner of two Taylor dreds, I sure am eager to try em  :D

While I am probably not in the market, I fully intend to test drive a GP at my FLGS once my shoulder recovers from surgery in a few more weeks.  Right now I cannot play anything.    >:( :o
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

Two weeks ago I had surgery on my left wrist, and the surgeon told me I should be off work for at least three days with a 5 pound lifting restriction. Despite a soft cast on my left hand, I was playing open chords on my 517 the day after surgery to keep my fingers limber and because it just sounds so good I couldn't stay away. Best wishes for your rapid recovery!

Thanks for that report. The description of the 517e has a good and informative statement on why the V-class bracing helps improve the intonation. I had a hunch why that was true, and the description tells the reader why.  I also noticed that Wildwood had no purely acoustic 517s in stock. I believe that model is moving like hotcakes at an IHOP.
