T5z - what's the history of a 'squashed Z inlay?
« on: February 21, 2019, 08:59:06 AM »
In virtually all photos I've seen of T5z's the inlay has been of a diamond or double-diamond type. My instrument has what I can only describe as large 'squashed Z's' with an orangey interior. Does anyone know the reason for this difference?

Never seen that fretboard inlay before; but if the guitar was a demo (as you mention in another thread), it could have been given some new inlay scheme Taylor was trying out.  It may appear on future guitar models, or Taylor may have decided to scrap it; only time will tell...

I think I saw this inlay one one photo when Googling Images, but can't recall where. The 'Ex-demo' was (I think) just a guitar that the dealership used for demo-ing T5z's in the shop. Whether or not it's more than that, I don't know. Recently they've been promoting the 'Grapevine' finish which I know you can buy. If and when I find out, I'll post a follow-on message. I'm soon taking it to a Certified Taylor Repair Workshop for them to take a look at the problem that I have - so maybe they'll know?
Thanks for your own response.

MYSTERY SOLVED ... I found Youtube upload from Cosmo Music which featured a Custom T5z at this year's NAMM. In that, the inlay is identified as Taylor's new "S-curve with Cocobolo and mother of pearl".  I assume it's now going to be offered as an option on future models. Personally, I still prefer my original name for it as a "squashed Z".

Neat. I agree with you, your name has more pizzazz. I like that inlay for the T5.
