Odd buzz/rattle on D
« on: October 22, 2016, 07:04:56 PM »
This is most noticeable on the open D string but can be reproduced by playing a D on the other 2 bass strings. It is annoying, like something rattles at that frequency. Has anyone ever had an issue like this? I'm wondering if it is a component of the ES system? Something loose?

I have had this. In my case it was the actual board in the ES-2 on my 812ce when it was new. If it doesn't seem like a fret or to be from the bridge area, make sure the knobs are tight. If that doesn't do it be suspicious of the actual board in there.
I also tried drop D tuning and that really brought out the buzz, fwiw.
Of course, if you have just changed strings one of them might not be seated correctly, and that sound would come from the bridge area.
I know more knowledgeable people will pipe up. Taylor was great paying for the repair no problem on warranty.
Good luck, not fun trying to find these things.

Thank you! I've checked the strings, reseating them all. It is a rattle coming from inside and the D frequency seems to trigger it. Would my local dealer be able to check out the board or would it have to be sent to Taylor? I've only had it for about a month (bought it new).

Sounds like something inside the guitar body is resonating with the 'D' note.  Your dealer should be able to check for loose bits inside the guitar, and correct it.

It could be related to ES wiring; a Custom GO I picked up a while back had a loose wire because one of the adhesive-backed clips that hold the wiring in place came off.  Or the battery receptacle in the guitar could be looser; I have an older T5 on which the battery door was vibrating when I played a 'C' note on the 'A' string.

Deb- my local Luthier(authorized Taylor repair center) was able to diagnose and fix my 812ce in about 5-10 minutes, popped on a new board and I was on my way. As it was also a D vibration I wouldn't be surprised if this is it. Holding it up to my ear it really seemed as though it was coming almost from the neck/body join, but not quite. I was really at a loss but it was a simple and quick fix.
Let us know what you find.

You have made me feel much better! I got this guitar because of continuing problems with my Larrivee. All I could think was here I go again... The guitar repair person at Haggerty's is Taylor certified so hopefully it won't be a big deal.

There were some wires touching the body on the inside. Haggerty's tech made it all better and I get to pick it up tonight! :)

YAY! Glad to hear it was so simple, sometimes these sympathetic rattles can be hard to find.

Hello everybody.  I am new to this forum. I have the same EXACT problem.  I have a 2016 214e DLX.  I had already brought mine in to be checked, but the problem was not solved.  Before i brought it in, I changed the D string as I thought I had a bad string.  Not the case.  Then I proceeded to tighten down the tuning pegs and well as make sure the bridge end pins were seated properly, which they were. Still not the solution.  I called Taylor and then they told me to bring it in. When I got the the Authorized service center in my area, they said it was because the neck was bowed.  So he adjusted the neck and he said the buzz went away, but I think we just could not hear it due to the ambient noise in the store.  So I get home and started to hear it again.  It was really bothering me.  The noise absolutely sounds like it's coming from inside, near the neck and most especially by the volume and tone knobs.  So what I did was I squeezed my hand in the sound hole and put a little pressure on the circuit board itself, and the noise went away... So I call back the service center, he said it's highly unlikely that its the circuit board itself.  He told me to check the wires, but not are loose.

I am glad I saw this post because I can now show this thread to him, they change out the circuit board and hopefully the noise will be gone.  This should be covered under warranty correct?

If you bought the guitar new (i.e., you are the first owner), from an authorized Taylor dealer, any and all repairs/parts/labor should be covered at no charge to you under Taylor's warranty.

Mine was a wire against the guitar body. It absolutely was not a fret/string buzz. The repair person did check the board as well. He said it isn't all that uncommon with all the electric components inside. The rattle has gone away. It is covered under warranty. It was driving me crazy. I hope you are able to have it sorted soon!

Welcome to the board, and yes, it may be the circuit board. If they don't want to believe it PM me and I will put you in touch with my Luthier, who is one of the few authorized to do installs outside the factory. He changed the board and it has been cured now for almost a year and a half.
Always tough to track down these rattles though,
Good luck,
