String Maintenance, This works very well for me, any body else?
« on: December 04, 2014, 04:57:40 PM »
Acid fingers?, dirty ? just plain dry? Squeeks? squables?
Over my 10 year. Here's what I find as the best string maintenance.
No squeeks , reduces finger callousing.
Yes you have to buy the stuff, but it go's a looooooooong way.
and the over spray will make you Hardwood floors sliperly so be careful ! and shinney.
 A spray can  Its
  "Tone  Finger  ease"
I swear by this stuff, Just spray a little little bit onto a swatch of cloth and wipe the strings down before play, especally under them to clean that area.
You will never have tarnished strings, Coroded strings , and it  will extend th life buy tripple fold.
Yes this is what I use and it works great.
Now the only worry I have is the Health effects, porlonged.
Something this slippery is kinda strainge,  Spaceage, kinda like teflon non stick
Any body else use this product?

I think I've come up with an even cheaper solution.  It's called Dial Soap, and I apply it to my hands with a bit of water, rub vigorously, rinse completely, dry thoroughly, then go play the guitar.  It seems to remove the previous evening's open-mic flop sweat perfectly.

Um, Tom, I think your account has been hijacked? I'm expecting a posting next saying you have a pre-war Martin guitar waiting for me, all I have to do is go to my bank account and.....

I have no idea if my fingers are acidic or not. I assume they aren't because my strings seem to last for a good while (even when I used to play week in and week out). That or maybe I just don't notice... I've heard some folks change strings weekly and I shudder in horror  :D

But reducing finger callousing? No way! Ever since I was young and learning to play it was drilled into my head that I needed to build some nice calloused fingers. I remember reading about George Harrison as a boy learning to play certain chords until his fingers were bleeding. That gave me extra motivation to callous up. Some folks complain about medium gauge strings--and I'll not fault them for an opinion--but if it hurts I wonder if they might just keep at it until their fingers catch up. I don't know if that has attributed to my string preservation but I'm a proponent for calloused tips. The bigger the better I say! ;)

I have a true story on finger callusing and medium strings. The little music store in the small town I grew up in was owned and operated by a mother & son. The mother also was the music teacher in the elemtary schools in town. I guess every other time I went in to buy new strings the son had waited on me. One day I went in and the mother, Mrs. Hart, was behind the counter. I asked for a set of medium gauge strings and she would not sell them to me until I showed her the calluses on my fingers!

Finger-ease doesn't reduce my callouses. "While not for application to hands, residue transfers from strings to fingers and conditions callouses, keeping them soft and smooth without snags." :)

Wonder if the calluses will disappear if one uses Nolan Ryan's solution for calluses on his pitching hand when he was with the Mets: soaked them in pickle brine!

I used to use it in the stick "rub on" form, not the spray.  Got away from it and need to go back.  Thanks for the reminder.  Elixer strings are not cheap so if they last longer all the better.
