Does the three piece back make a huge tonal difference?
I've always been leary of those.
According to Bob Taylor, a three piece back makes no difference in sound. What's interesting is the website list the 324CE-k FLTD as a two piece back yet mine is a three piece and it seems the ones mentioned here are also 3 pieces. Here's a link to Bob talking about it at 9 min 50 secs in :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF6JP1WV6Xw&list=PL67B31A5CE0F0D4E1&index=1

The difference between a three piece back and a two piece would be pretty hard to compare.  First off to get a good comparison you wood have to come up with two guitars that are made from the stock of wood, and of course the same specs.  Maybe Bob Taylor has done this.  I have owned a couple of three piece back Martins, the M36, but I could not tell you if it sounded different than a two piece back, they don't make a M-36 in a two piece back.

... What's interesting is the website list the 324CE-k FLTD as a two piece back yet mine is a three piece and it seems the ones mentioned here are also 3 pieces...

The same thing happened with the 400-Series Spring Limited guitars (all-gloss Ovangkol); although the web site indicated they were all two-piece backs with seemingly no option otherwise, many 416 and 456 guitars arrived at dealers with three-piece backs.

The Taylor web site is notorious for it's 'shortcomings' when it comes to accurate/non-ambiguous information on guitar specifications/options; I think this is probably just another minor example of that...
