New here, and new Taylor 312ce !!
« on: January 30, 2014, 12:57:24 PM »
Hi everyone! I'm new here, just wanted to say Hello!

I'm Mauricio Duque, from Mexico City, wanted to share I'm finally back in the Taylor family, 5 years ago I did one of the dumbest decisions I've ever made, sold my Taylor 514 Engelmann, supposedly to get a "better" "different" instrument to make company to my Collings OM1 Engelmann.

Anyway, I regret that decision a lot! after several guitars, Martin, Ibanez artwood, Larrivee, and not being quite as happy as I used to be playing my Taylor, I bought a new Taylor again!

Those guitars weren't giving me "that" feeling, you know, when you play an acoustic and it just feels like home.

My wife was kind enough to give me the support to get another acoustic after spending money during these lapse in other acoustics...deep in me I was feeling the "I want a Taylor again" feel.

Totally my fault, I never should have sold that 514! so finally I own this new 312ce, and it feels great! love the sapele/Sitka combo in a small body, and sound wise is right up there with the 514, the 514 was mellower, but for a slightly smaller guitar sounds so rich!!!

Just wanted to share this, and to everyone when in doubt...don't sell!

Great day everyone here at this amazing forum! :)

Welcome to the forum!

And welcome back to the Taylor fold!  Sorry about the regret, but on the bright side you learned a valuable lesson about chasing "better" against a known "excellent."  So glad the 312 has made you a happy Taylor owner again :)

Welcome to the forum Mauricio. It seems we all have stories about the one that got away.

Thanks a lot all you guys for the kind words, feels great to be in a Taylor Forum again, I remember the first one with nice memories!

Regarding the new Taylor 312ce, I must say it has a lovely tone, so pure, my mind wanted to believe that since my Collings OM1 is "genuine mahogany", more -hand made- and way more expensive it should sound a lot better, not at all! just different character and its own personalities.

The sapele/Sitka is amazingly rich sounding, of course there's the Taylor brightness, which I really like! but soooo well made and a lovely crafted instrument, thumbs up Taylor.

Welcome Mauricio! Congrats on your new Taylor. I recently acquired a 522 12-fret and I agree. These GC Taylor's have a rich full sound. Enjoy!

Chime in. Glad to have you around. And if you can, post a pic or two so we can share in your 312ce with you.

Thanks again you guys!!   I'll try to upload some pics soon,

The guitar is currently in a stand looking proud, and getting used to its new home,  currently the RH inside my home is pretty much around 50%-60% .

The action was really low once I got it home! was drying during the winter, and lots of relief, and in 10 days now it has settled at 3/32" sixth string at the 12th fret, and a very nice and tall looking saddle.

How long do you think it'll take to reach a normal belly at the top? I straightened the neck quite a bit, and feels great!

I never use a pick, just fingerpick Paul Simon, James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Laurence Juber style, and the Taylor sounds so beautiful.

But have been carefully checking the action and neck relief, and waiting for the 312 to get used to its new Relative Humidity...she was thirsty it seemed.

You should check out Laurence Juber playing "Little Wing" with combined licks of Hendrix and Paul Simon!  Definitely worth adding to your playing repertoire--a little too advanced for me.  But +1 Simon, Taylor, and Lightfoot!

+1 for Laurence Juber's "Little Wing".  It is on my life list of songs to learn.  The tab is published in a book from AMR, where you can also get his CD's.  I got to study with him at a guitar camp in Alaska a few years ago.  Now I know what  PhD in guitar looks like......

At a late night jam we were going around the circle performing.  Without realizing it, I sat down in the only empty chair to LJ's left.  All the camp instructors were lined up in a row to his right.  It soon dawned on me that I had to play right after LJ and the other big boys.  He played Little Wing, and I had to follow that!  Can you say  pressure???  That is certainly one of my goose bump guitar moments.

I too play James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Simon, Jim Croce and similar fingerstyle stuff from the 70's - my era.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

Great, I'll definitely add that tune soon! Little wing, quite a challenge for sure, just watching his most recent DVD on solid air records, it's inspiring really!

And talk about pressure, I can imagine playing after this guy, wow! I would have my fingers stiff as a rock from the nerves! but that's a really cool experience, glad for you, how cool!

Juber's fingerpicking is so expressive, currently I practice everyday some of his arrangements (Lunar eclipse, PCH, in your arms, solo flight, Martha my dear, To new Amsterdam, the 5:55,  etc...) and these tunes really sound clean and beautiful on the Taylor 312ce, even though the guitar is a little tight sounding since it's brand new.

And singing Jim Croce, John Denver, Cat Stevens, Don Mclean sounds great! (the guitar, not me!) and strumming to America or Eagles really makes this GC vibrate!

I was born in 1980, I'm 33 but how I wished I would've lived those times! just to see Crosby Stills & Nash at their top!!!
