214e reunion
« on: March 30, 2013, 01:57:19 PM »
About 18 months ago, I had the chance to pick up a mint condition 2007 214e from my local music shop.  I wasn't in the market for it as I had an '09 214 already but there was just something about this one.  Although a couple years old, the gloss top shimmered golden brown and it was flawless.  The EIR fretboard really stood out.  Long story short, it went home with me.  I played it a couple months.  Never compared its sound to my other 214.  It was just a unique addition to the family.

Fast forward to last spring, I got word the unit was deploying.  I good friend of mine and fellow Soldier, of which we share a love of great acoustic music, had mentioned he wanted to buy a guitar to ship over and maybe I could work with him on lessons or something.  I shopped around with him making several mentions of a couple he could get in his price range.  After careful consideration, I decided to give him the "friend discount" on the recently acquired 214e.  After a couple weeks in theater my GSm and his very own 214e arrived unscathed.  I was excited to be able to work with him on basic chords and it would be fun.  As luck (and mission requirements) would have it, I was relocated to a different camp a couple hours away and down the drain went the thought of our lessons and playing time together.  8 months later, I got word from him he was heading back to the states early and sadly, he had given up on the dream of learning to play and asked if I wanted to buy back the 214e at a lesser price than I sold it to him.  Now what do you think I said?  I flew up to the camp he had recently left and snatched it back from a mutual buddy that was hanging on to it for me.

So, last night, only having the 214e back in my possession for a few days, I decide to take it out and play it little.  I immediately fell back in love with it.  There was just something about this guitar.  It just feels good.  Not to forget sounding great.  Agreed Taylor laminates will almost never be better than its solid wood counterparts but this gem sounds twice as good as most solid wood other branded guitars of the same price.  I did some research on this little guy and learned what I had was actually something a little special, to me anyway.  Being an '07, I believe this is the first year Taylor switched the 200 series to EIR laminate from solid sapele.  Being that it is the first year for the model, I'm eager to get back home and meticulously compare the sounds between my two models.  Being a couple years apart, one with gloss top and one with satin, surely I would be able to tell a difference, right?  Either way, I'm resigned to never letting it go again.  It was meant to be in my little guitar family.

First, and foremost, thank you for your service to our country!  Neat story.  That is going to be your most special guitar, with that much history behind it.  Your friend, having owned it, will always be a part of that guitar.  Nice memories for you.  It was probably meant to be (to come back to you).  Enjoy it to the fullest!

Hi Chad,
it looks like you and this guitar were destined to be together! I'm on the lookout for my first Taylor, and find myself drawn towards a 214, despite my initial reservations about them being a laminated guitar (people keep telling me that I will regret not buying a solid wood guitar) but I like the bright sound of the 100 & 200 range.

Regards,
         Ian.

Top Man DMB for your services to your country.
Re the 214 I am on the hunt for my first Taylor.
I tried a 214CE and a 414CE the other week and to be honest I preferred the 214 which surprised me a lot. Need to try a 314 now though, ideally at the same time as the two above.
Really like the look of the 2013 214 Koa`s though. Stunning looking guitar and gloss all round.

Your post put things into perspective for me, as I just finished coloring Easter eggs with my two young daughters.  What an honor and privilege we have here in the USA that our freedom is unencumbered by tyranny.  Willing and able volunteers stand in harm's way for us to be able to live our lives without thought of the sacrifice that you and you family have made on our behalf. A couple who is coming to dinner tomorrow has a son who is a bomb tech who just deployed to Afghanistan.  From the bottom of my heart, I love and appreciate your service and pray daily for your safety.

Hey Ian,

Don't let anyone talk you out of something you like.  Just try to play one prior to buying just to know for sure you will enjoy.  You don't want to be that guy that buys a guitar only to sell it a couple months later because you really didn't like it.  Guitars can take some time to grow on you.  The more they are played, the better they sound and they closer you grow from simply liking to loving it.  The 214 is a great model if you're looking for your first Taylor.  Pay no mind to the snobs behind the curtain trying to upsell you or discouraging Taylor laminates.  I have both a solid wood L7 and a couple laminates.  Having and playing both, I don't regret purchasing or owning the 214...two of them.

Enjoy brother.

A huge thanks for this and you are very welcome.  The Soldiers I serve with do this because we actually enjoy it.  It's rewarding.  Being away from my own two young little girls for a year sucks.  Most definitely thankful for technology that allows us to communicate, especially on the greatest holiday of the year, Easter.

Enjoy your Easter my friend.

Thanks for you advice Chad, I need to play a few more. I'm actually enjoying the buying process, it gives me the opportunity to look at and play different guitars, but so far I've not seen anything (here in the U.K) that compares with the sound of the Taylor's, so that's definitely where my moneys going!
Good look on your deployment.

Regards,
          Ian.

Chad, your story is heart warming. It's amazing to me how many of us form a bond with certain instruments and I am glad your guitar has returned home.

Thank you for your service. And Happy Easter to you as well!   :D
