I went backwards ...  8) ... my first Taylor was an 814ce (I was older, a long, long time player and my sons had "inherited" or more accurately, hi-jacked, my other acoustics so I took all this as permission to get a nice guitar) ... later, I bought a Big Baby Taylor as a travel guitar but that was "inherited" by my youngest son ... so I got a 114ce next as my "take anywhere" guitar ... obviously, the 814ce is a much nicer guitar but I still very much enjoy the 114ce and it is usually the first of my Taylor's to draw the assignment for alt tunings ... there are some weeks when it gets most of my playing time ... (for example, this week as I am experimenting with open Gm tuning) ...

I do agree with the previous posts that recommend saving up and going with a 300 or above to get into the solid wood category as an upgrade from the GS Mini ... but a 114 is no slouch for the price IMO ...

Well thanks again everyone. I have been to the local GC and played several Taylors.. and a few others. I gotta say this although I don't want to ... there really isn't a heck of difference from the GSM to the 114 (other than size).  IMO. 214 is pretty and sounds nicer.. somewhat.. rosewood is nice. the 314 and 414 are better yet. Honestly.. I love them all. So.. to make a long story short. I placed a few bids on a 314.. 312.. and a 422 that was a several years old but sold by a very reputable dealer.. Lost out on all of them..  :-\. So which one of you guys bought my guitars?  :).
I'll keep trying..but the 114 is still in my sights for cost. If I want something nicer in a year... so be it.
I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again

Well thanks again guys... I'll be heading off to the local GC today and i'll pick up 314, 214, 414 & yes a 114. I'm sure what conclusion I will come up with.
In all my trips there i have never played anything above the 114. I just look at the price tag and back away :).
You guys do make a very valid point. At my age i don't need 4-5 Taylors layen around.
Without breaking any fourm rules I am wondering if ebay is good place to look.

Thank again

Jim

My friend age has nothing to do with it, however budget has much. The 114 is a very good guitar however the 414 is an excellent guitar. But as far as having Taylor's laying around, I am the same age and I have 3, but believe me they do not lay around. Good luck with your search.
Taylors; 814ce, 316e Baritone 8, GS mini
Martin C1K ukulele
Yamahas; FG700S, FG720-12, Guitalele
Epiphone ES-339 Pro

Good point Blacktoe... I'm sure no matter how many Taylors I end up with I'm sure they will not just sit around. Played a 414 and 314 at GC today as well as the 114. Of course the 4 & 3 are better sounding and just down right fun but they are a bit outa my price range and the ones I see in auctions are taken before I can get my hands on them. So.. a new 114 may be in my arms after all. Also.. this is probably because i'm inexperanced, I played a few guitars that were hanging on the wall on the other side of the room with price tags that are + $1500.00 and they didn't play much better than the 114 at half the price. Don't get me wrong... i like the others but they just didn't have the feel or appeal to me.
Thanks for the feed back

Jim

Just get a BTO and skip all the guitars in the middle.  ...

Corrolary: buy someone else's BTO used.  BTOs are more-often-than-not "special" guitars that are spec'd well and lovingly treated.  Provided it floats your boat, getting any BTO used is a serious bang-for-buck buy, IMHO.
