I agree with many previous posters regarding playing them first.  If your near Chicago, stop by Tobias Music, they always have a few BTOs in stock. The road shows are also a great place to test drive many options and possibly make a great deal.  You never know what might speak to you that you hadn't considered.  Also, you won't need to wait for your guitar to be made.  It can be made to GO!

I will echo the "find a good dealer" answer. Ted at LAGuitar Sales helped me select the tonewoods to get the sound I was looking for along with every other aspect of the guitar. The guitar is the most beautiful Taylor I have ever seen but most importantly, it sounds just the way I wanted it to. Others always comment on its looks and then pick it up to play it and I love watching their face as they strum. Rich, warm, and intimate are adjectives I often hear which ironically are words I used to describe what I wanted to Ted.

I certainly can understand the concern! I've been talking to Brad Daniels of Kolaya Guitars for a while about a build. I originally wrote to him after he put up some Amazon Rosewood sets on the AGF, which were lovely. We emailed back and forth for a month or so about his instruments and how he could address my needs (I'm deaf and use a cochlear implant to hear.) He was very perceptive and offered a number of suggestions for wood types and builds that might work best for me. After one email exchange I decided that I was able to trust him to make a guitar that would be very good, and so made a down payment to get on his build list. Before we decide what woods to use, though, I'll be playing his Tornillo Carmen and another Carmen that he's working on now. Once we know how I react to those guitars, we'll be able to make a pretty good choice about woods and what I need from him.

So, what I suggest is to *talk* to Taylor about what you need. Don't just pick some pretty wood and say build with that set. Tell Taylor what you like to play, what you want to play, how you respond to other Taylor models and other guitars in general. And let them guide your options. You'll be far more likely to get a spectacular guitar that way.

(And by the way – I think that choosing woods for their looks is a really really bad idea.)

Drock,

What guitar did you get?

I got a GA cedar/hog short scale with a beautiful edgeburst. To show the idiot I am you can see pictures of it in the "what Taylor do you wish you never let go" thread on this forum. :(

I'd love to have the confidence to order a Taylor BTO. Every time I think I'm ready, the thought of all the not so good Taylor's I've tried out at different dealers over the years comes back to me. As much as I love Taylor's, I've played more than a couple high end models that just didn't have it. It's the fear of ending up with one that doesn't have the tone, balance, bass response, volume etc. that stops me every time. I know fit and finish along with pure beauty will not be an issue. I'm not afraid of the playability either.

I know there has got to be some disappointed folks who have gone with a BTO. I've read a lot of post from BTO owners who talk mostly about the beauty, but not much about the sound. What's been your experience?

Thanks, Res
