Belt rash on back of my 315ce (and how to avoid?)
« on: March 31, 2012, 10:15:35 PM »
I noticed I have some "belt rash" on the back of my 315ce.

It is not plainly visible, but I can feel it and see it if the light is just right to reveal it.

I'm pretty sure I'm the cause of it.  I do play it live in P&W on Sundays, and for other occasions.

Question:  How do you avoid getting "belt rash" on your guitar?

I have taken to wearing buttoned "camp shirts" (casual-dressey) that hang over the belt and act as a shield between belt and guitar, so I'm good there.

But what about occasions when I/we are required to dress up, and play guitar?  How do you handle this so that your beloved Taylor does not get belt rash?

I am firmly in the camp of "It's gonna' happen eventually".

Now, I fully appreciate that a lot of people want to do everything they possibly can to avoid getting wear on their guitars. I can dig that. I just really prefer to play it like I stole it. I'm one of those people who just have no problem beating the bejeesus out of my guitar.

The bottom line is that it is going to happen. So, ask yourself if you want to deal with the angst now and move past it, or simply put off the inevitable?

I've seen one guitarist pull his belt such that the buckle is a few inches to the left of center.  Or wear a nice shirt you either don't tuck in or so you don't have to wear a belt.

The other alternative that I exercise is to simply not care.  Not being tongue-in-cheek; truly, just play it and not worry about marks.  FWIW, I care for my instruments in terms of their health: humidity, not getting dropped, securely on wall or stand, etc.  My gear has to last so abuse is a huge no-no.  But I don't sweat one drop over cosmetics.  I used to, many decades ago.  But since I've stopped that, I've felt far more liberated both in playing and owning nice instruments.  FWIW, anyway :)

or this ;)

DS custom sells static pickguard material in sheets,
but it only works on a gloss finish :(

a material similar to #13 might work

"Not care" is the approach I tend to employ:

It's got some buckle rash, to be sure, but there's no wear like what you see on the top. Honestly, I don't know that the wear on the back would even photograph well...

Using low tack blue painters tape, I tape a microfiber polishing cloth to the back of the guitar. Remove when done and wipe down the guitar.

I'm liking the idea of the "blue painters tape".

I use a sheet of clear static cling material on the back of both my GC-5 and my 000-28EC. Works well (and it doesn't react with the nitro on the Martin either).

I want to do this with my 615ce, as it has the "full gloss" treatment.

Where can I get this clear static cling material?

TIA!
