NGD: Taylor 914ce LTD w/ Bocote b/s
« on: February 02, 2022, 10:44:34 AM »
Hey folks.
Back in November, I turned 50. Many of you have read my back story about my strokes and vision loss. Well, my wife surprised me last Thursday with this gem of a belated birthday present (I have the best wife on the planet and it isn't even close :))

Here is my 2021 Taylor 914ce LTD with Bocote back and sides. I was super surprised and I am super excited about this guitar. This will likely be the last guitar I'll ever buy and it's definitely the only guitar I'll ever NEED.

Here are some photos... please excuse the bad photography... being sight challenged doesn't really help with photo skills.

Thanks for looking,
Tom - DEGG

Awesome wife and an awesome b-day gift.  I have always admired the stunning 914's, but any 900 series was above my pay grade back when I was still acquiring.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

BTW, Tom,

The top has beautiful silking throughout, definitely rare and reserved for their uber-upper end.  The used this "grade" of sitka on their old RTaylors ...great that they still have it or can source this finely grained spruce.

I love the quasi-retro abalone ring rosette!  This is a definite nod to their old aesthetic (pre Powers) that has been absent on Taylors for a looong time now.  So glad to see it back; even more, adorned further with purfling that matches the binding.  Same to the "Artist" fretboard inlays which are so like my '08.  And, of course, the figure on the back is really something else.  Stunning, truly!

Absolutely beautiful Tom.  Turning 50 was a good one for you.  Best birthday wishes and if I were you I would give your wife a big hug.  Congratulations.

That is one beautiful guitar and it’s tough to think of a nicer gift for a guitar player. Congratulations ! You will enjoy every minute of playing it and the beautiful music it helps you make.

Wildwood guitars has several similar 2021 914s but with ziricote rather than bocote. I don’t know the difference in those woods …They must be cousins or something. Anyway Enjoy!!!

Hey Edward... Yeah, thanks for this. I find myself just sitting and holding it and staring at it (probably missing much of its beauty with my eyes but what I can see... oh my goodness!!). You obviously know much more about the historical attributes of these guitars but I DO know that it all really works well together.

That is one beautiful guitar and it’s tough to think of a nicer gift for a guitar player. Congratulations ! You will enjoy every minute of playing it and the beautiful music it helps you make.

I don't know the difference either. I have researched some and understand Bocote to be closer to Madagascar/Brazilian than EIR (whatever that means). I know its from Mexico/Central America/West Indies natively and is definitely in the Rosewood category. To my, not very refined, ear I think the highs are rounder than EIR.

What I REALLY know is that its beautiful and warm (the guitar in its entirety) and crystal clear definition. The guitar is very good already at pointing out my technique faults. Leaving the pick too close to vibrating strings, fretting too far from the fret, etc.

This will not be your last guitar ....who are you kidding?

Maybe or maybe not. I don't know. I just honestly don't see myself needing/wanting another guitar. This definitely was my bucket list and life/legacy guitar. I can only play one at a time and this one does everything I want.

I did send an email to Taylor to get a spec sheet specific to this guitar and ask about the 'LTD' part of the name.

Per them, the LTD part comes them making 148 of these. So, for what its actually worth, that's interesting to know.
